I haven't been using a RDA on a regular basis for over a year, but when I did use one I found I needed to change the wick material every 3 days or so to maintain a satisfactory flavor.

Make sure that you keep your wick material wet while you vape. It's nearly impossible to actually burn cotton if its kept wet. It may have scorch marks on it (which by the way Rayon never has in my experience).

Flavors/e-liquids which are darker in color, and/or use a lot of sweeteners tend to gunk up both coils and wick material faster.

You might also experiment with a different wick material. I found that I preferred Rayon (cellucotton).

From your picture, it looks like you are using a dark juice and dark juices are known to gunk coils and cotton quickly. If it is also sweet, it will gunk things up even quicker.

Also, from the pic, it looks like the cotton may not be contacting the coil fully on the outer edge. This could lead to uneven heating and weird flavor, possibly even the burnt taste you are experiencing.

Consider switching from cotton to rayon. Lifespan of cotton is a few days, even less if your vaping a sweet juice or overheating the coil. Rayon is a far more robust wicking material due to the juice flows outside the fiber unlike cotton the juice flows inside the fiber(thus its expansion) so one at a time the cotton fibers plug up until no more juice flow, dryhitting begins then burnt. Great rayon thread in here to learn its properties and how to wick the coil with it. I've been vaping rayon several years now and will not use anything else. Also read up and learn how to thin tails(not cut or trim), tail density does make a difference in the vape quality especially if your using rayon.
This vid at the 30:25 mark shows how to thin tails. Tail thinning I consider a game changer.

I use RDAs and Squonk mods with RDAs. At work... hmm... no, not really.

It's all about the juice.

Rayon is very good but less easy to acquire and if you use dark juices, the coil itself might still need cleaning (wash and dry burn) often.
I use cheap and plentiful cotton. Sometimes I get a week. Today's sqounker had new coils and cotton last night and already needs changing. That's with 14 month old Custard e-liquid. I can dry burn the coil, but that means throwing the cotton away. I'm not sure how expensive Rayon is to do this... I suspect not enough to put anyone off using it - once they have got some. :)

The only size of rayon box number I know is Graham box #44060..500 feet. You can go to local salons and ask if they use it. I did and lucked out that one used that 44060 box...got a couple feet, OMG awesome stuff then my own 500 footer from a Sallys Beauty Supply.
The box I have is 44043. It was a bit cheaper at my local Sally's, but it is only a couple dollars more online. Here is a link.
CelluCotton Beauty Coil 3lbs.

After my initial eye rolling and OMG's after giving this rayon a go(several years ago). I researched it a bit to be sure about using rayon as wicking. Went to visit my oldest son who is a 7 hour drive away and has a Sallys there. Soon as I got into town...first stop was Sallys and all I knew that it was box 44060 I needed. Well spent 15 bucks...

It is very inexpensive. I bought a 3lbs (10in x 10in x15in) box that will last longer than I will live, for $15.

We wish it was that cheap.
In the UK/EU, we pay about a £/€ per meter. Shipping not included.

IMO; It IS worth it, nevertheless.

Cheers

Agree with the others. Also I like chainvaping and high voltage (avg 4.2v) so cotton lasts me 2 or 3 days. Starts with drier vapes. I vape around 25/30 ml before changing cotton.

Well, to put it into perspective better, it would be equal to 136 packs of cotton bacon. The cotton bacon would cost you $545 (@ $4 per pack) and the rayon was $15 for the same amount.
Even more helpful.

I (somewhat obviously) saw the madness in 'premium' products at $4 for a pack of cotton. I pay $1.50 for about two year's worth at a time.

Welcome and glad you joined.
Almost all aspects of vaping contribute to life of a "coil" with regards to taste. Could read an overview:
What Ohms should I choose?
Might also look at rayon wicks ability to deliver your juice more effectively than cotton:
