Burnt Plastic Taste with new Kanger Mini Protank

Upgraded from my standard ego Twist because of the nasty taste coming from wicks. My vape shop talked me into upgrading to the mini protank with an egoC Twist tank that you can change the voltage of. It was good in the store, now i'm home and tasting a burnt plastic taste every few drags. The taste is 10x worse if I up the voltage at all from 3.2 (the lowest setting on my adjustable new batt). But 3.2 was what my original one was anything (if I remember right).
My questions are:
1. Is the burnt taste just because it's new and is there a way to fix it?
2. Is there a point to the adjustable egoC Twist batt they talked me into dropping $40 for, like are some juices better with higher volts? Is there a real reason or any upsides as to why it's better to have it adjustable, or was it a pointless purchase?

Would so so appreciate it if anybody had any answers for me. So happy to be using vapes now, I am now able to kick my 2pack a day Reds habit. :)

Which Mini Protank - 2 or 3? I have both styles, and I prefer the 2 (because of the single coil) for my eGo C Twist. The 3 has a dual coil and I'm not as crazy about it.

I'm still a brand-newbie, but some tanks/coils are better with higher voltage batteries. However, the Mini Protanks are recommended at 1.8-2.0 ohms (I believe - someone please correct me if I'm wrong) which should be used on the lower settings on the Twist.

What kind of juice are you using? Sounds like you may have a bad coil or didn't let the juice sit for long enough before you vaped on it? I'm sure people more knowledgeable than me will be along soon lol. Good luck!

If you are getting a burnt taste (we call those "dry hits"), if usually means your wick cannot pull the eliquid fast enough to keep up with your battery. There are a couple of things you can do:

1. Dial down your voltage. This will vaporize the eliquid at a slower rate.
2. Take a sharp draw (or two) on your drip tip (without engaging your battery). This will pull more eliquid into the coil so that it will be available when you press the battery button and take a draw.

You will get the feel of this over time and develop a sense of how often you will need to do this to avoid "dry hits". The PG/VG ratio of your eliquid also comes into play, as VG is thicker than PG .

2. Is there a point to the adjustable egoC Twist batt they talked me into dropping $40 for, like are some juices better with higher volts? Is there a real reason or any upsides as to why it's better to have it adjustable, or was it a pointless purchase?

The benefit to a variable voltage devise is the ability to "fine tune" your vaping depending on your eliquid flavor and the ohm of your coil. I like my fruits at a lower voltage than I like my deserts and other complex flavors.

When you first start, dial the voltage down to the lowest level. Then slowly dial it up until until you find the "sweet spot" of your eliquid.

To me it sounds like you have a bad coil. Usually if you crank the voltage up to high it will burn the wick up. I had a vision spinner with a pro tank 2 on it and did that. I would suggest doing a dry burn on your coil, then starting at a low voltage and bump it up in .5 volt increments until you get a result u like. You can look up dry burning on YouTube or switch up your coil with a new one. If you look on the coils it will say the ohms on the side, when I started vapeing I used this chart for help General Safe Vaping Power | Voltage | Resistance | Ohm Chart
it would help to know your pg/vg My sweet spot is 3.7 volts with 2.2 coils

Also my preference with the protank mini 2 ( I use 4 of them to have 4 flavors always available to me ) the. Very first thing I do with new coils is remove one flavor wick. The coils come with the wicking coil and two flavor wicks installed. Again just personal preference but I find the draw and flavor much better with one wick removed. I also cover two of the three holes on the connector base of the protank mini 2. I have had coils last up to 6 weeks as well by cleaning and dry burning regularly ( just FYI ). So far the protank 2 mini is the best and most reliable so far. I use regular eGo VV batteries and no mods however.

Dry/burnt hits are typically a result of the wick not being saturated enough with juice when you take a draw. You could try removing a flavor wick or two, though I don't advise this because to me it seems to mute the flavor. You can also try flipping the rubber gromet on atomizer head stem over or removing it completely. Removing it completely should stop dry hits in their tracks, however there is a chance it could cause flooding. Best of luck with your fix man.

Since you described it as a burnt plastic taste instead of a dry or burnt hit, I'm with the others who say bad coil or head. Several months ago, I got a batch of evod heads (same as mini protank heads) that had that burnt plastic taste you describe. There was a thread on here briefly of people complaining of the same thing. Seems some of us noticed that the plastic grommets were different lately. Not sure if the problem is the grommets themselves, but maybe a problem with the wire. Anyway, if you can rebuild coils, re-coil one of yours to see if it helps. If you can't, try some new heads.

So many good explanations and suggestions, but one thing I still can not figure out after reading many threads about intermittent bad taste on the Mini Protank 2 (and others). I never get burnt taste on my evods (until end of atomizer life or if I forgot to prime when first installed). Mini Protank 2 uses the same coils. Put those coils in the Mini Protank 2 and I get disgusting, scary metallic/plastic/chemical draws every few hits. Priming before every single hit is the only thing that reasonably reduces the occurence, but it still happens too frequently. I chalk it up to gluttonous vaping technique, but damn, that's how I enjoy the vape. I want glass, not plastic, so I will give glass evods a shot. I would prefer something from the Protank/Aerotank line, but I worry that I am going to throw money away on a series of glass tanks that make me feel like I am inhaling a melted plastic toy.
