I just got my twist yesterday. I fell in love with my first non-menthol juice while at the b&m vape shop.

Obviously I'm new to the whole vv thing. And I've been playing around to see which voltage the flavors vape best at.

But it seems that no matter what voltage I start at, there's a burnt taste until it gets warmed up. Even at 3.2v. After 5 hits or so, I can vape nicely at any voltage under 4.2.

What am I missing? This happens on the iClear 16 and the smok tumbler. It leaves a horrible taste in my mouth that doesn't go away for awhile.

I have no experience with either of those tanks, but it seems that you're having an initial wicking issue. When I fill a tank, I usually try to either let it sit for 15 minutes or so OR I'll prime the wick/coil with a drop or two of e-liquid.

The next time you run into that issue, try taking a series of unpowered drags - just vape like you would normally, but don't push the button - then take a normal drag to see if it's better. If it is, then wicking was your problem.

My tank has been full since last night. Did I mess up the wicks or something, since this is happening every time I pick up the twist after letting it sit for awhile?

Do you mean take some unpowered drags every time I fill the tank, or every time I use the twist after not using it for awhile?

I have similar a issue with Protanks right after I refill them. Since I'm aware of it, I start out at about 3.7v, then after a few drags I slowly start increasing the power. If it still tastes off I wait for awhile, and then increase again a few volts. Many of the BCC/BDCs often don't perform well at higher volts/watts, despite having standard resistance.

Why don't spend time wondering why it happens with mine, I just know that it does and treat them accordingly. You have to keep in mind that these are little pieces of mass-produced plastic &/or glass, so quality and consistency can be iffy. We can't put too high expectations on them. I hope this helps.

You didn't mess anything up, it's really just something that can happen with the Protanks, and depending on the thickness of the juice you're using, changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure can mess with them. Also, some juices can "gunk up" the wick and coil assembly quicker than others, and that will definitely interfere with the wicking.

Yes to both, really, depending on when you have the problem with the tank.

I am not sure if this is even relevant but since that has never stopped me before I am going to go ahead and make my half informed suggestion :)

I am pretty sure that I read on here somewhere that certain liquids can burn quickly at higher volts. Since you said that you can vape nicely at any voltage under 4.2 I wonder if the issue is the liquid your using just cannot handle being heated up higher than that.

I thought that might be the issue, too. So I kept turning the voltage down. Even when I start at the lowest setting, it still tastes burned at first.

Depends if the coil is badly burnt the bad taste will always be there. If it is just a bit burnt the juice in the coil can pick up some of the burnt taste as it sits in the coil. Then as you vape and new juice replaces the old the taste could go away. Not the most likely cause for what is happening but possible.

How do you avoid it as much as possible tho?

I want to be careful about this answer because I don't want you to get the impression that replacement heads (or the PT) are crap. You're dealing with a mass-produced item that can vary from unit to unit and still be within tolerance. It doesn't make them bad, it just simply is what it is.

There's a lot of things you can do to change the vape quality on a PT that run from removing the so-called flavor wicks, to adding a cotton flavor wick, to rebuilding the wick and coil assembly yourself.

Then again, it's very likely that you'll find a juice/coil combo that will work just perfectly without fiddling.
