I'm brand new to vaping. Is it normal for any flavor eliquid to have a burnt kind of taste to it? The atty is probably still breaking in, and the carts are full of eliquid. So I'm not burning the filler. I am just curious. I expected butterscotch to taste just as good as it smelled but it tastes burnt, so does the mboro cart that came with the kit.

it could be your atomizer still has the factory primer on it. it can take about 20 puffs or so to get rid of that taste. you might also drip a couple of drops right on the atty coil and then put in your cart and see if the burnt taste gets better. Some attys do not come with much primer and others do so its hard to tell you without seeing it firsthand as to what you are experiencing.. I always prime with a couple of drops whenever i put juice in my cart and everytime i refill the cart i place a couple of drops on the atomizer.

If you flood out the atty just unscrew and blow out the excess into a paper towel and replace with a drop or town down the atty and then replace your cart.

It sounds like what doots said: shipping fluid (don't worry, it's harmless, but tastes awful). I always blow through the mouthpiece end of a new atty, into a white paper towel. The shipping fluid is colorless, but leaves a wet spot. Keep blowing until it won't make another wet spot. If that doesn't work, I rinse with hot (not boiling) water, and blow that out, then let it dry overnight.

I just read on the Vapor4life forum that the older batches of Butterschotch taste that way. Someone got the new batch and was good.

She specifically said "carts", and lists a Joy 510 in her signature, so I'm thinking that's probably an unrelated issue.

EDIT: Dang, doots be quick! :)

Yes I'm using a 510. I've been vaping this thing for well over 2 hours (not nonstop) so I think the factory fluid should be all gone by now. Jagsfanrick said that the old batch tastes that way so maybe I got some of the old batch, although I just ordered it Last Thursday and received it Saturday so I would think it'd be part of the new batch. But then again, I do not know.

Interesting dilemma. What to do. I could buy elsewhere to see if their butterscotch tastes any better.

Thanks for your quick replies. :) :)

And you haven't refilled or put on a new cartridge?
Because yeah, that's probably it.

And I'll also throw this out there for future reference...

Dry atomizers, flooded atomizers, and wicking
Basically, you want to keep your atomizer happy with plenty of juice, but not too much as to flood it.

A good sign that it's flooded is that it gets a little harder to draw on and you get little or no vapor.
Flooding it, however, won't hurt it at all, and you can just blow out the extra juice.

Letting it get too dry, on the other hand, is not good for the atomizer supposedly.
But regardless of whether it is bad for the atomizer or not, you still don't want to do it.

You can tell it is too dry when it starts to taste like crap.
A nasty sort of burnt plastic type of taste.

One reason it might get too dry is if you burn through the juice faster than it can wick up more.
That is why people experiment with different kinds of filler materials to use in their cartridges.

If you take only a drag or two every now and then, you should be fine.
But if you use these like a cigarette, the wicking process will have trouble keeping up.
There are ways to deal with this, and people have different methods that work better for them.

And of course, when the cartridge is running low on juice, it needs topping off for this reason.

It seems fine now. I didn't change anything. I again added more juice to the filling and it tastes better but still nothing like it smells. Oh well. When I need to stock up on carts, I'll go ahead and buy a different set of juices. It could very well just be this juice isn't made right or something. No clue. Weird.

Edit: I'll also buy atty's.

Oh, wait, I think I've got it now!

So, the juice ran out, the cartridge went dry, and then you sucked down all that was left in the atomizer before you realized it was time to refill. So you put the standard 2-3 drops and thought all would be well, but alas, when an atomizer is TRULY dry, it can take somewhere in the vicinity of 6-8 drops before it might get rolling again.

There is a mesh that surrounds the atomizer coil, and it fills up with juice before the juice gets to the atomizer coil. If that mesh is empty, then you have more dripping of drops to do.

Did I get it?

This happens to me on occasion and I only put it down to...me lol Well specifiaclly me and a hot running 510. SOme days really nice flavors (that I know are nice) start to taste..off. Sort of bittery/burny type off. Its not the liquid - and its usually not the joye either but I think sometimes its one of the following:

Me - my tastebuds since quitting smoking have been unreliable to say the least. Ditto my sense of smell. I think its fine, then I smell something that I KNOW the smell of, and its not 'right'. Right now for example I am smelling cigarette smoke. Nobody here smokes, and there are no cigs around. I checked and I am not on fire. :D
The house remains 'not on fire' too. No idea where the smell is coming from but there it is, I can smell it (taste it too, its not nice).

The Atty: The 510 atty can run hot - very hot (I use a PT and believe me it can get roasting!) - and I think at times this dries out the filler faster than I think it has. I often open the cart to top off and the filler is white its so dry. I also vape the juice faster than I think too to the same result.

The atty2: Some of them need blowing out a lot. I have an issue (caused by me overfilling I think) of getting juice down inside it so I have to blow it out more than normal (lol) It's not enough to flood it but there always something in there to be blown out.

The filler: The filler just doesn't wick as well as it should imo. No wonder so many people mod it. I am getting some blue foam if I can ever get to a store that sells it. It isn't the best at wicking, gets dry, and I think can burn a bit (not omg its on fire burn, but woah, singed) on the bridge. Can't imagine that tastes great either.
I wash my fillers, fluff them and cut a strip off one side so its not so HUGE to try and get it to wick better. Don't ask me to mess around with straws - that didnt end well :D

So you see - it could be many things, but none of them are insurmountable! You will taste the juice (MR T's juices are wonderful) but you might have to go thru some learning curves to make your PV behave itself. 510s are wonderful and Im happy with mine, but consistency is sometimes not as great as it could be.
