At first, I just want to say that I know of the danger with wrong use. And I am going to research a lot more about mech mods before even trying it.

Requirements:
- Can take a beating, "outdoormod"
- up to $20-30 for the mech only (excl batteries etc)
- Preferably 18650
- Small (stealthy)
- Durable
- I can take a clone
- Tube

My vaping style:
- Use a cool fire IV, bought different mods with switchable batteries, getting into rebuildables with subtank mini
- Usually 1.5-2.0 ohms
- @10-13w

This will mostly be used in times when box mods are inconvenient to bring.

Would also like recommendations for matching tanks. I want this to be all stainless steel and it should look "strong"

Tips for what is convenient to buy beside the mod.

:)

Since you mentioned side and top buttons, are you only looking at box mechs?

Bottom button mod are shorter. And there are only 1 or 2 side fire tube to recommend. The Poldiak or a clone like it, Fasttech has a couple. Otherwise if you want durable go stainless and NON hybrided with a lockable switch and 1 piece tube. Beyond that the differences between tube mechs is mostly cosmetic.

I love my Clone Brass Origin Mech. I got it from focalecig, for $19, saw fasttech had them at $13 recently.

This is not a glamorous suggestion, but it fits most of your criteria, except stealth. The Aspire CF. has over-discharge Protection, short-circuit protection, and lock/unlock function (which might be handy if you wanted to carry it in your pocket). At nearly 5" (114 mm), it's on the tall side, though.

You can find it at ecig charleston and a few other places for $14.99.

With a normal mech mod you have ~65mm of space between + and -, but with a side button, you add another 40-50mm of conductive material to bring the button closer to the top, adding resistance and dropping the total voltage available at the connection by a small %
Of course. I'm tired, I'm not focusing, thank you for explaining though :)

But I'm going for bottom button then.

I only recommend the Sony vtc4 and Samsung 25r batteries for mech use.
You get used to a bottom bfiring switch very quickly, and then it becomes natural.
In terms of single cell non-kickable small mech mods, the tarsius 4Nine and the Praxis are probably about the smallest 18650 mechs on the market. The 4Nine is a little smaller between the two, and the tube is parted out so you can use 18350 or 18500 cells as well. The drawback to the 4Nine is the firing switch doesn't lock, and it is a hair trigger of a button, so I wouldn't put it in my pocket. That being said, the switch is magnetic and when set up properly is really nice. Not all the clones have a properly designed switch, and some of the 1:1 clone have magnet polarity issues.

The praxis is 18650 only, but is probably the least likely mod to fire accidentally due to the switch design. If you buy a praxis clone, make sure it is 1:1, and be prepared to take the switch apart to lube + burnish the edges, it will improve the switch action tremendously.

If you buy a clone of anything, try and get one made by SXK/Infinite, they seem to be a cut above the rest of the clones.

Heard a lot about those batteries as well, so I'll have a par of those.

Believe bottom firing won't be a real issue.

18650 is what I want. And having it in my pocket is a must.

Lube and burnish the edges?

I would be grateful if you provided links for the things I need (voltmeter etc). And if I understand correctly, kick is only to make the mech vv/vw right? And is insulation and such something good ti have?

Going to take a look at those you named. Was thinking of buying off of fasttech, since I know that shop well and shipping with tracking is really cheap. But if there are other cheap options as well, I'll go for it.

It's a telescping mod, so extra threads to keep clean, but a solid device. Authentic but very reasonably priced, mag switch, lock ring, 3 different models out now. I have the V1 and it's still working great after over a year. For a topper... anything you like. I just got a velocity clone and it's pretty awesome. I recommend it.
