Sept 2013 – Good holiday? Welcome back to Politics.

The European Parliament was distinctly quiet over August with no real news to help or hinder the fight against E-Cigarette regulation. After the vote in July everyone was anticipating the report by Linda McAvan MEP for the tobacco Directive 2012/0366. The days passed and the chance for MEP’s to read and amend the report prior to the final date on the 4th September, dissipated. The report was held off until the 30th August when it was released with amendments already added and surprisingly with a date of 24th July. The community wondered why such a report was delayed so much as to give MEP’s only 4 days to read 320 pages and give careful consideration to what they believe should be in the Directive.

The debate Agenda - 2013-09 - Index is to be held on Monday 9th September and was to be followed by a vote the following day. Unfortunately for Linda McAvan MEP, she did not anticipate the reaction from other members of Parliament who felt the procedure was being rushed through and with the growing evidence, was insufficient time to makes ones decision. In the meantime, more information became available supporting E-cigarettes and the positivity that surrounds them.

Have a heart and keep it

The EU workshop that was held earlier this year, may have worried people with such negative reporting from ‘experts’ who represented their research groups and as is business, wanted funding to research more. The WHO had a very poor presentation with outdated information and caused MEP’s to feel nervous about their voters health. Independent research studies have taken place and the latest information comes from the very reputable Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos of Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Kallithea, Greece. In his study, he looks at the effects of E-cigarettes on the Coronary system and its functions. Unsurprisingly the report was very positive and the results proved that the use of an E-cigarette did not affect the health of the individual whereas comparative studies with smokers saw adverse effects.

You can watch his conference on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__ztrGafEg4 where he presents his findings and his support for E-Cigarettes. The news spread well amongst the community and added more evidential data to the growing support scientifically.

Soubry and a repeat performance

Anna Soubry followed up her meeting with the scrutiny committee with a letter http://europeanmemoranda.cabinetoff...18068-12_Min_Cor_31_July_2013_Soubry-Cash.pdf as she had promised. We suspect that William Cash MP did not quite expect the request she made within this letter. Soubry decided that proceedings had not been suitable to her and asked for the transcript of the meeting to be altered as she has since learned more on what she was expected to have known in the first place.

The poor appearance before the commons scrutiny committee by Anna Soubry MP did not alter her determination to add to her popularity with reasons as to why she herself smoked many years ago when she was young. The ‘smoke’ after her defending her actions on the packaging debacle which was ever present last month, seemed to have cleared enough for her to report in the pressAnna Soubry: I took up smoking as a teen because of 'gorgeous' packets - Telegraph that her attraction to Cigarettes was because of, funnily enough, packaging. She was attracted to the gorgeous St.Moritz pack because they were Green and looked glamorous.

The campaign from the new independent group began and came out with force. A meeting was held in Brussels to great success and included many professionals who have been the voice for E-cigarettes in the challenge against the proposed plans. The press conference reached out to the press and the MEP’s who wanted real information on what E-cigarettes actually mean to the community and the future health of smokers worldwide. A letter was handed to the EU from friends and families who are concerned about their health and to ask the EU to seriously reconsider the present course of action. It was supported by over 30 MEP’s who know just what the implications of this regulation would mean.

SWOF – Story so Far

The campaign videos by Andy Sutton, has been updated with another new excellent video with the story so far. This compelling video is one to watch and you can find it herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoSf5SKp71c&feature=c4-overview&list=UUAy2QbmqgmTUJ--CoK5J3xA.

MEP to MEP

One of the main supporters of Linda McAvan and a shadow rapporteur on the Directive, Karl Heinz Florenz, sent a letter to MEP’s seeking support in the measures taken and stressing reasons as to why they believe they are right in doing so. This letter was quickly replied to by Fabrizio Bartot, who questioned the letter and thus it became a hot topic on the internet. The letter has further been added to and was reported on Clive Bates website http://www.clivebates.com/?p=1486#more-1486. The growing resistance to the Directive is gaining pace and the support for E-Cigarettes is growing in numbers by the day.

Tweet wars

As more people came back from their summer holidays, they were returning to debates heating up the twitter network. From Linda McAvan https://twitter.com/LindaMcAvanMEP repeating the WHO spamming with repeated claims about how they are here to save the children, to the community pointing out actual evidence to discredit the comments. It seemed that everyone was getting involved and tweets were flowing fast with opinions alive to the debate.

Delaying the vote European Parliament Delays Vote on New Tobacco Regulation - Real Time Brussels - WSJ

A meeting was organised between the main political parties in the EU to decide as to whether enough time had been given to MEP’s to digest the report appropriately. MEP’s discussed matters and agreed that time was short so a delay was necessary. This pushed the vote back to October 8th, the original date for the vote which had been brought forward by Linda McAvan a few months ago. This made McAvan furious and she, along with her supporters, yet again claimed that the tobacco lobby was pushing tactics at the risk of children’s lives. This ignored the fact that it was consumers along with concerned MEP’s who had requested such a delay. It is also clear those looking to inflict the industry with such regulations, fail to ever mention the Pharma lobbyists who outnumber Tobacco lobbyists by 3 to 1.

MEP Martin Callanan did mention them with a view that clears some of the murky waters surrounding the EU Parliament. At 1.28 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0_fkagTGDM&feature=player_embedded#t=5334 on Vapourtrails.tv, he clearly explains the reasons for such accelerated procedures.

The vote is now planned for 8th October and this gives an opportunity for the community, campaigners and people who believe E-Cigarettes are not a medicine, to get in touch with their MEP’s. To inform others of the latest situation and to add support to those busily fighting this regulation.
