I used to be a genesis guy but recently(well 1 year ago) gave kayfun a go and loved it. The reason I liked SS wicks is because they lasted so long, 6 months at least but usually had to fix a few hotspots in between.
My first 2 kayfun builds failed pretty quickly (lasted just a few weeks) but the third one I built with double legs and it went on for half a year without a hitch. I eventually dimantled it not because the coil failed but because I managed to put some crap juice in it which just didn't want to leave and I broke it while trying to rinse it out.
Anyway, I tried making another one but double legs are tricky to make without kinks, especially considering I'm using a .2mm kanthal and that I'm targeting 1.5 ohms which is just a few wraps. The subsequent attempts failed after a few days of use since they developed a hotspot right at the kinks where it transitions from double to single. Ideally I'd spot weld some nickel wire to the kanthal for legs but can't do that right now.
TLDR start here:
So yesterday I decided to try something different and made a twisted wire coil. It was pretty crap in the beginning, burning at the legs I'm guessing but it was late so didn't bother to rebuild. Today morning though all the burn was gone and it was working great. We'll see how long that lasts but how can you explain the sudden disappearance of the burning?
What I've come to expect from the kayfun is that it will leak out of the air hole for the first day or so but will then stop. If I use more silica so it wouldn't leak then its gonna start giving me dry hits after the first day so something happens inside that will constrain the juice flow somewhat. Maybe an extra effect of this is that the legs remain dryer and thus cant burn?
