Imagine a world where dairy, meat, eggs and alcohol never go bad. This is exactly the world that Dr. Dan O'Sullivan, a microbiologist and medical researcher working at the University of Minnesota, envisions. Along with graduate student Ju-Hoon Lee, O'Sullivan has discovered, isolated and patented a substance known as bisin. This naturally occurring lantibiotic may be the key to preventing bacterial growth on foodstuffs in the future. Rather than spoiling in weeks, studies indicate that with a simple application of bisin, foods may take years to go bad.
Can food last forever? New food preservative invented: bisin | Idea 4 Invention
sure they'll probably discover that it causes monsterism in a few years but hey, its a cool idea.
i think it will go a long way to reducing the sheer amount of food waste that occurs each year. fruit gets moldy the second i buy it, if i can eek a year or 2 out of my bananas then thats cash in the bank.
