I wouldn't use extracts because they aren't concentrated enough for the flavor to come through. Most of us use flavors from LorAnn's, The Flavor Apprentice and FlavorArt. There are also flavors you can buy from Cappella's and Bickford which some people like. These are concentrated flavors which work very well for mixing e-liquid.

Some people add a sweetener flavor, but that's really up to you. I use sweetener in some flavors. I get the vast majority of my DIY supplies from OneStopDIYShop. The prices and customer service are definitely world class.

The flavor extracts found at grocery stores is probably too weak and too many additives to be good for vape. If you are talking about the super condensed type flavors found in the cndy-making, cake-making aisles, it is probably ok. These are usually sold in tiny bottles, since the cooks only use about a drop of it in recipes. The easiest way to get flavors, IMHO, would be the internet. Plenty of good vendors with good prices. Shipping price isn't bad, and it takes only about 4 days.
PG, I've heard, can be bought at tractor or farm supply stores - it is used for medicating cattle. You can also pick up some syringes at the same place. I find it easier, but more expensive to get it off the net.

Another problem with the unconcentrated flavors, other than strength, is that most are alcohol based (not a problem necessarily), and contain oils - which aren't good for atty's and lungs. I looked at what I had in the cupboard last night, just to see. I did have a bottle of concentrated grape candy flavor, but I think the kid used it for his "experiments." The rest is just alc. based stuff with oils.

Stores that carry candymaking supplies often carry the same LorAnn flavorings we use. :)

Even Walmart carries limited Loranns flavors around some holidays. Last year, I think after Easter, they had dozens of grape left over, on sale for like $0.50 for a two-pack. We used one bottle to drop a few drops in limeade to make grape limeade, then my 9 year old used the rest of that bottle to make flavored crud (mixture of water, ice-cubes, soda, flavor, limeade, and whatever dissolved off his dirty hands).

I found the other bottle in the cupboard just now and made a spur of the moment mix with some menthol juice I had. It's not the best, but vapable.

What exactly do you order from these online places? I see that Loranne for example sells oils, flavorings and fragrences. I'm just not sure what exactly to get (I'd assume NOT the fragrences)

Yes, the flavorings and, (as lorAnn calls them) candy oils. Some people prefer to avoid using oils (it may reduce the life of your attys), and some people don't. Personally, I use oils as well as the other flavoring bases. You probably want to read the stickies here.
