Okay, I couldn't think of a good title for this thread. I chain vape off and on all day, including in public, and I sometimes get loud coughing from people who are just being obnoxious. My question, though, is when secondhand vapor DOES make someone cough. My friend wants desperately to quit analogs but coughs like crazy when he tries ecigarettes. I want him to try some vg-only liquid and see if that helps, but my max vg sends him into coughing fits. He also coughs around secondhand vapor. We went to the bar a week ago and I had to put my ecig away for the evening as the secondhand vapor was making him cough. I know he's not doing it to be rude or obnoxious, he legitimately has some sort of sensitivity or something.

Has anyone else been in a situation like this? What would you do in this situation? I know some of you may not believe me or may be surprised since so many of us think vaping is so harmless. I don't know why it makes my one friend cough, and nobody else I know.

Hmmm maybe you're vaping at too high voltage for him and that is making him cough? I find with my Vision Spinner, my throat burns if I turn it up to the max voltage.
Try turning it down a bit or even get him to try a super basic kit for staters, just so he can ease into it. The concept of vaping fruit flavored liquids is pretty foreign to the human body.

But to answer your general question: Can vaping in public be rude? I don't think there is going to be one perfect answer but generally I think in enclosed spaces like a restaurant or a mall it can be viewed as rude because not everyone is OK with second hand vapor. I think like anything there is a right time to do things and a wrong time to do things. That being said, you can't make everyone happy with what you do in public. So i just say, make a SMART decision on where and when to vape just so you're comfortable doing your thing while the people around you are too :)

It's rude where it's rude, and not where it's not. Same with playing with a flashlight, blowing bubblegum bubbles, texting or yammering into a cell phone, chewing tobacco, or listening to an iPod with the headphone volume too loud. Study humans for a few minutes and you'll pick up on the queues as to whether it's a good idea, or the equivalent of sticking your finger near someone's face and saying "I'm not touching you".

I'm just vaping a standard 3.7v ego, not vv (my vv broke). I don't know why he coughs so much. I cough a bit too if I haven't vaped in a few hours, I remedy this by taking tiny hits with lots of air the first few times. When I had my vv I'd also vape at 3.2v if I hadn't vaped in a few hours, but after the first 5 or so hits the coughing goes away. Higher quality liquids don't make me cough as much as crappy quality ones, but it's still an issue for me.

A lot of vapers seem to insist it's okay to vape in public and that non-vapers who oppose it are the rude ones, but I think we should be respectful towards others, especially after this incident with my friend.

You've nailed it XJ-linux :thumb:. You just said what I've always felt about this but didn't know how to put into words.

Another thing is that the nic level you're using my be to high for your friend and for you for that matter if it makes you cough as well. Just a thought... you may want to step it down a bit and see how you both respond. As for being rude, until the laws change I try to treat it as though I'm smoking a cig and give the people around me some room but that's just me. I had one guy walk up and stand right next to me when I was waiting for a bus and I purposely put at least 25-30 ft between me and the others that were also waiting. He says your smoke bothers me... I replied with a smile, It's not smoke and you should go stand with the other people where you'll be safe! We looked each other in the eye for a moment and he walked back over to the bus stop with the other and never looked back. I really try to be respectful of others and go out of my way to enjoy my vape in public without disrupting other and when I do I expect/demand that other that don't smoke/vape do the same. When I'm at home I like to chase clouds, I enjoy it. When I'm in public or at work what I vape is no more noticeable that what a cig is in the smoking area when I chose to go outside.

I'm torn between the ideal of individual freedom and that of democracy. The problem is how those clash at times; ultimately, if I respect individual freedom, I have to respect it for all. My freedom ends where someone else's freedom begins. Vaping subjects someone to my vapors, whether harmless or not is irrelevant, and sometimes, they may not want to. So who is responsible in this case? It's my vapor, so I have to control it, like I'd control a dog, while I'm in public. The truth is the non-smokers/non-vapers outnumber us by quite a bit. If they don't like it, they will resort to the same type of legislation that has made smoking what it is today.

I don't think it's the nicotene content for me... I bought some 0 mg liquid to dilute my 12 mg and try 6 mg, still coughed. Although I haven't tried the 0 straight, that's an idea.

It may be nicotene level for my friend, the ecig shop up the road has 0mg nic samples. as well as 2 different vg-only brands which seem to help me some (not sure, it might be in my head). I think I am going to take him there this weekend.
