It looks like there should be enough play in the spring to put two cr123a cells in there for 6v vaping. Is there any reason not to?

Lots of Reonauts rock their Grand at 6 volts. Use LiFePO4 RCR 123A batteries. They're pretty safe.
Grand or Woodvil Rocks at 6v the only battery's I use for 6v is LiFePO4

I agree with the battery recommendations. I never stack anything but LiFePO4.

Got 4 REOs going at 6v right now 
All with the beautiful blue AW's as well.
One with a 3.5Ω IKV 510 and three with Boge 3Ω cartos.
Once you do it going back to 4v is a boooooggggerrrr though.

I have some blue jacket AW LiFePO4 500 mah 3.2v batteries that fit pretty tight so I've been afraid to use them. They don't compress the spring completely but there isn't much room to break the circuit. Are these safe to use? My Tenergy RCR123a 3.0v batteries are about as tight.
It's not ideal, but as long as the insulator on your atty/carto is in good shape, you should be okay.
