In my happy place
CVS is looking to twist others arms to stop selling tobacco products.

http://blogs.wsj.com/pharmalot/2014...xtra-co-pay-at-pharmacies-selling-cigarettes/

Last month, purged its 7,700 pharmacies of tobacco products in a gambit to embrace a commitment to improving public health and generate goodwill. But the move comes with a price – an estimated $2 billion in annual sales will be sacrificed.
Now, the company is hoping to find a way to compensate for that bet. Its Caremark pharmacy benefits manager, which is one of the largest in the U.S., will soon require some customers to make an extra co-payment, in some cases up to $15, on any prescription that is filled at a pharmacy selling cigarettes and other tobacco products, according to sources.

I keep feeling better about moving my many prescriptions to Express Scripts (save $ too). Express Scripts lost the bid to acquire Caremark to CVS. IMHO CVS is positioning itself to be a health center with the Minute Clinic and their messaging. Yes, they take a hit for cigarette revenue but they love the insurance payments and the extras that people pick up while they're there. Heck, I've done that in the past. But wait, that's not enough -- via Caremark let's charge a premium to other pharmacies that carry what we don't approve of. Now, I think their attempt at mind control is right up there with the politicians who beat the drum to 'save the chillun' and I'm not buying the brainwashing. Scandalously, a year ago the CVS in town carried Blu. Ecigs are probably long gone, I haven't been in to check.

I'd bet their extensive legal staff have found a way (loophole) to make this latest grab possible.

Even if such a loophole does exist, this is a PR disaster waiting to happen. Just wait until some cute little old lady (who doesn't have a car, lives on a fixed income, and uses the only pharmacy within walking distance of her home) is on the local news breaking down in tears because she can't afford her prescriptions anymore.

And the local MSM telling everybody that it's because the other pharmacy carries evil tobacco products unlike wonderful CVS.

This is a Pharmacy Owned intermediary between Corp America and the Pharmacy industry attempting to use regulations to force other Pharmacies to abide by their policies or pay a fine for not doing so. This isn't about tobacco, it's about market share. 80% of the people walking into the non CVS pharmacies don't smoke and don't care about the fact that the Pharmacy sells cigarettes; however, now they will and either go to a CVS or get angry and attempt to get their pharmacy to discontinue selling tobacco products. At least they can continue selling that healthy junk food that causes no health issues.

The one thing I don't understand from the article, "CVS' reported plan is to have Caremark begin raising certain customers' copays by up to $15 when they fill a prescription at a pharmacy that sells tobacco products." Does this mean Caremark has convinced some companies to increase their copays for employees if they shop at a drug store that sells cigarettes. I can't see how Caremark could make that decision unilaterally.

If nothing else, I really believe that this story, along with the e-cig saga, are indicative of how "dirty" the insurance, health care, tobacco, public health and pharma businesses really can be. I'm somewhat skeptical by nature, I don't consider myself naive, and I realize that business is a war in most cases, but these stories are amazing to me. Clearly illustrated by this article and the move by CVS, is that actual health issues, health care and service will always take a back seat to dollars.

Same old anything for a buck .
Did you know that insurance companies are looking to charge more to people that run marathons , jog , run trales and crosses fit teams , they are more prone to have accidents and go to the ER .

i have been telling my non-smoking healthy acquaintances for years their day would come.
next up.bike riding, skate boarding, cross country skiing till, finally you will live longer and breath more air.

Chalk me up as one of those that intensely dislikes CVS. Even before they announced they were going to quit selling cigarettes, their stores made me uncomfortable. I don’t know if it’s the lighting, the people, or what, but their stores just have a certain creep factor to me. It is a personal thing (problem), but simply stating the bias up front.

Then CVS announced they were to stop selling tobacco and what a big sacrifice to their bottom line it was and all that bs to get the headlines. Call me cynical but I never believed they were going to lose billions a year out of the goodness of their little hearts. If they really cared about people and had billions to lose, they would set up free clinics and meds for the homeless.

We get insurance through my husband’s employer, a big box company. Had to pay $500 out of pocket for medical testing to keep my insurance through them this year. We hardly squeak by financially as it is with their crappy pay. Today my husband brings home something laughingly called “My Benefits. My Choice. What’s New for 2015” We may have had this "choice" last year and my husband "forgot" to tell me about it but it's new to me. Here’s the pertinent parts for this post:

TOBACCO-FREE DISCOUNT UNCHANGED IN 2015

Employees can still receive a $65 discount per month ($30 per bi-weekly pay period) off their medical rates by pledging to be tobacco-free in 2015. In that pledge, employees state in 2015 they and their covered dependents will not use tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes and forms of smokeless tobacco. If employees do not re-enroll in coverage, they will keep the same tobacco status they pledged last year.”

2015 PRESCRIPTION DRUG BENEFIT CHANGES

CVS Caremark will continue to be the pharmacy benefit manager for full-time employees and their families enrolled in the Lowe’s medical plans, except for those enrolled in a Kaiser HMO (Kaiser administers their own prescription drug plan).

For 2015, Lowe’s will be implementing the Maintenance Choice program for maintenance prescription drugs. In this program, employees must fill their maintenance prescriptions through mail order or at a CVS pharmacy, and will receive a 90-day supply at a discounted price. This program is mandatory.

Lowe’s is also making updates to the eligible formulary medication list and specialty prescription process for 2015. Impacted members will receive a letter from CVS Caremark explaining the change and will provide alternatives for 2015.

In 2015 all eligible pharmacy copays and coinsurance will apply to the out-of-pocket maximum for medical benefits. Please visit the My Benefits site for more information.

I've used the same small (tiny) town independently owned pharmacy for 24 years. I know the people there, they know me and they've always done right by their customers. CVS is 30 miles away and couldn't care less about me. Or you. I don't have a car during the day. The post office, where we get our mail, is three miles away and closes at 4pm. Six mile walk. Neighbor can bring the prescription home to me on her way home because she works at the pharmacy and live two houses down.

There were some other points I wanted to make but can't remember them right now because I'm still pretty steamed. Just pointing out that CVS is hurting people, not helping them.

So basically, now people are being forced to fill their scripts at CVS  there isn't much about this that doesn't p... me off.

I feel for you :(
