How exactly do you know that it's time to refill and/or replace your cartomizer? I have been under the impression that cartomizers can be refilled indefinitely until the atomizer coil breaks. Likewise I have been under the impression that if it doesn't taste like burning and you are still getting vapor then it doesn't need to be refilled. However I have read a number of threads on here that seem to suggest that maybe I am understanding this wrong. Also suspicious is that I have been using the same cartomizer for the past three days now (with a level of frequency that has to have exceeded a pack and a half of analogs by now) and I'm still getting vapor and it doesn't taste like burning poly-fill.

You must not be a very heavy user.

There are wire coils inside the the cartomizer and polyfil is wrapped around the coils. That's the heating element. When the cartomizer is dry, the coils will burn the polyfil.

To prevent that from happening, it's best to keep the cartomizer filled with juice. When flavor drops off, take off the top and drip a few drops of juice into the carto. You should notice an increase in flavor and vapor. How long they last depends on frequency of use, what type of cartomizer, what type of juice you use.

When it's hard to inhale and you don't get any flavor, they're usually done. If you take one apart, you'll see the coils sort of gunked up with juice.

As for filling, you will learn by taste. When the taste starts to fade, refill. On the little boge's, I refill about every half hour. My monster ego mega dual's every couple hours. But, time is subjective--everyone vapes differently.

Total lifespan? Depends on juice mostly. Thin clear juice will give a long carto life, thick dark juices gum the coil up more quickly.

My problem is my dusty work environment. My air intakes clog long before the coil gets gummed.

I use Boge LR Cartomizers and can get a week sometimes more out of one at my vape pace.
I refill when the vapor starts tasting a bit dry and discard them when the draw gets tight.
Phil Busardo has some great youtube videos on cartos and how to fill them and clean them.
He also does great reviews on juices and devises.
If your new to vaping you can learn a ot from his reviews.
Hope this helps.

Hi Janusxvii, I normally get about six days of use from a cartomizer before I will stop using it. I normally use about 4mL per day , sometimes less most times more but... I normally begin to notice a stiffness and less heat and a lack of flavor around the end of this time period that is less enjoyable than day one. I do use a clearish liquid, that is slightly sweet, menthol and 100% VG slightly thinned with distilled water so its the consistancy of regular PG liquid, that I do make myself. This is consistant for me as of the last few months. When I stop using my cartos they still produce a fair amount of vapor but the taste is not "Up to Par" as would be about the only way I could personally describe it. When I was first started vaping I would run just about anything through my atty and found less lifespan performance with darker liquids more common.

I get about a week on Boge 2 ohm cartos. Like everyone mentioned, keep them wet. You can burn one and it will still work but it will probably taste bad from then on. I toss them if that happens, they are cheap. Sometimes the draw wll get tight, like sucking a milkshake through a straw. Sometimes there are bits of gunked juice in the central airway. Straighten a paper clip, and gently poke straight up through there, if that is the problem it can make a big difference. I used to slush them out with iso alcohol to clean, but if I get a week or so out of them (about 3ml a day), I go on to a fresh one.

Much thanks to everyone for the quick replies. I just swapped it out for a new one and I can definitely notice a difference in flavor. Right now i'm still using the prefilled ones that came with my ecig (a RN4081). Bought some eliquid the other day but I don't care for it. Cant wait until the liquid I ordered online arrives (probably Monday but hopefully tomorrow).

Cartomizers are disposable. That is why they cost $2. You could try using one indefinitely but it will taste bad and drag badly.

People who use thin clear juices and keep their cartos damp so they don't singe can get 4-10 days use out of a carto depending on how much they vape, how clear and thin their juice is and how well they keep it damp. I'm a moderate vaper and I can get 7-10 days use out of a carto running about 15-20ml through it. I only use thin (around 80PG/20VG) very clear juices, not dark/cloudy/opaque juices that drop carto-clogging sediment. (note - since I alternate vaping 2 models, each with their own carto, I get 2-3 weeks out of a carto, running 15-20ml through each over that time)

As for when I add liquid - any time the vapor seems light, dry, or tastes the tiniest bit off or loses flavor, or if the carto is getting abnormally warm, I add liquid. I add liquid before I leave the house, when I get home, before bed, before putting a hot freshly charged battery on it. I also occasionally look at the stuffing (especially if I've been vaping it a while) and if the top of the stuffing looks white, I add some juice.

I use a simple plastic or delrin drip tip in place of the end cap so it is easy for me to remove that to look at the stuffing or add juice. I use thin clear juices that leave the stuffing white.
