Have always loved this one and was just reminded of it.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you. Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul and the other for your freedom!!

thanks for the contest, good luck to all......and now I'm off to read all the wonderful quotes.

Thanks for the contest.

It turned out that I'd been misquoting and misattributing my favorite quote. I thought it was:

"If you've enough for a loaf of bread
buy half a loaf instead
And with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed your soul"

And, I thought it was from the The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

However, in trying to be exact I found out that it is really:

“If, of thy mortal goods, thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves
alone to thee are left,
Sell one & from the dole,
Buy Hyacinths to feed the soul”

– Muslihuddin Sadi,
13th Century Persian Poet

And I still prefer the version I thought it was, but now that I've proved myself wrong I'll always have to do a mental "but" when I think of it. Though part of it may be a poetry translation issue - I know that the more accurate translations of the Rubáiyát aren't necessarily the ones I prefer.

In some ways life was simpler without the internet for instant research.:D
