I had an idea I wanted to try and it worked out pretty well. I don't know if this has been tried, but I thought I'd stick it up here as I had interesting results.
To describe this build in simple terms, it's a cotton wrapped 5mm in length chunk of round pourous ceramic wick wrapped in cotton with .28g kanthal wrapped around it.
Vapor and flavor production is excellent and comparable to a well built regular cotton coil with excellent wicking characteristics.
The thing that really stuck out was how long I was able to use this build. I ran it for over a month in the HeatVape kayfun 3.1 clone with no burning, dry hits or off flavoring! The only reason I took it apart was the Heatvape began to leak, so I pulled the build and deep cleaned the Heatvape and rebuilt it. This time I took pictures for you.
When I took it apart I noticed I didn't have the typical heavy build up I usually have on a well used coil. Yes it was dark and dirty (I vape a thick mint chocolate daily) but the cotton was not burnt in any way and I could still see the individual coils. Something about this build gives it a longevity I haven't experienced before.
Its a bit tricky to build so I posted some pictures here if you want to try it. The biggest challenge is wrapping. This is not a microcoil, this is a spaced coil, 6 wraps, coming out to 1.4ohm with .28g kanthal. EDIT: I typically vape it at between 10W and 16W on a VS rDNA40.
Advice on the wrapping, keep one of the padded sides of cotton on, remove a little of the cotton from where you place the coil so it does not bulge as much and then carefully roll it into a tube so that the pad you left the side on is on the outside of the roll. Then wrap it - this part is a little tricky given the need to hold the piece of ceramic in the roll without deforming it while you wrap. Space the coils so they are not touching and then mount to the deck.
You obviously can't dry burn and replace the cotton on this easily, its a new build every time. I suppose you could use silica instead, but that sounds even harder.
