Yes, I'm foolish. I've been warned about plugging in chargers directly into devices. One almost killed my laptop last year and today, as I screwed in my 510 into its charger, there was a hiss, pop and my beautiful 24" LCD died.
I'm not exactly bothered by the loss of the monitor, its 4 years old and I've been trying to find a replacement. But what does bother me is an observation I made about the charger itself.
I have 4 chargers. 1 in a draw that doesn't work and 3 that were great.
Today though after the incident, I noticed that one of the chargers has a small metallic piece missing from the center, which left behind a very small hole where it has previously been. It was an easy comparison to make. Also, to my surprise, the broken charger in the draw has that exact same piece missing.
Guess I have couple of questions now, to ensure future safety.
#1. What do you suppose the charger would have done to the monitor? (Besides shortening some connection) - and is it something that likely to be repairable?
#2. Are all usb wall chargers created equally? Do they all carry the same charge?
I figure I'll run down to radioshack and purchase an additional wall charger, but I want to ensure I don't need to Joye specific one.
#3. I was reading about the battery safety overall. It's possible for the battery to explode or catch fire. Sounds kind of sketchy when its 2 inches from your face. But while the lithium ion is housed in a metal case, what's the likelihood that it would cause injury?
