So I let the battery cool off. I made sure the connection points were dry and unobstructed (they were), and I hit the button a few times. I plugged it back in, keeping a close eye on it. I got a blue light in eight minutes with no overheating. Crisis avoided but I'd still like to know what causes this.

Hey, Solid Snake.
Glad you unplugged it. If ever a battery gets hot, be careful! Unplug it and let it cool completely.

There is circuitry in the battery shell that controls stuff like shorts, the 5 click on/off, power and charging. I think that the "done charging" part malfunctioned, but after you took it off, it reset(?) and is working fine now.

Unless Halo wants it back for an exchange under warranty (they do warranty batteries for 60 days), I'd be VERY careful charging that battery. Never unattended nor overnight!! If it is in warranty, I'd really lean on them to replace it, as it sounds like a Safety issue. You do NOT want one of these lithium batteries to fail.

Best of luck. I hope this was a one time thing.

I have several 650 mAh Halo batteries and I've never had one get hot. I also have a routine when I charge my batteries, I always clean the post and mote with isopropyl alcohol then make sure it is dry before putting it on the charger. I do this to make sure my chargers remain clean for a good connection.

Let us know what CS says and if this happens again or if you fixed the issue. :)

CS suggested cleaning the posts with alcohol, and even making sure the usb connector is clean. We'll see what happens. I marked the battery in question with a sharpie (just a small dot so as not to deface my beautiful midnight blue finish). If it ever happens again, I'll be able to tell if its the same battery. If it is, it may be a battery issue. But lets keep our fingers crossed that it won't occur again. Myself and Mr. Kringle appreciate everyone's concern.

I spent the last week charging my three batteries and watching them closely. The problem occurred a couple more times all on the same battery. The other two batteries charged fine. It appears that I have a battery that has gone bad. Oh well, life goes on.
Then retire the battery. imho, it's become unsafe. And why risk it? For $18, get a new 900mAh, or for $21, get a 1,300mAh. They have a ridiculous discharge time vs the 650, and you can rest easy.

(I really wish Halo would come out with a 1,300 or 1,600 Variable Volt model. I love my VV, but it doesn't last as long as the 650 does, despite it having a 900mAh cell inside.)

After several more days of closely monitored charge attempts, yes it is time to retire the battery. Not the end of the world though. Like you said, I'll pick up a new 1300 for a few bucks. I just wish I would have got more than four months out of it. Halo still rules anyway.

It isnt about how long, timewise you got out of it. What you need to look at is how many times you plugged it into a charger. They pretty much become junk after 300 times, but most of them start to seriously SUCK after 150 times being plugged into the charger.

Extreme swings in Heat and Cold can hasten their demise too. Such as leaving them in a parked, closed car in the summer for 15 minutes can start to seriously effect the longevity of a lithium batteries overall life span.

Is this everyone's experience with VV 900 battery? Seems like it should do better than that.

That is because the VV has regulated voltage, so the voltage does not taper off, that requires more constant amperage draw, which leads a regulated 900mah battery to drain quicker than an unregulated 650mah.

I know some people already knew that, this is just for those that didnt.
