So, our attys are all nickel, the bridge, the mesh etc.

Ok, before i get jumped on, I am not trying to invoke a mass panic or attck vaping etc. I am just genuinely worried.

from wiki

ToxicityExposure to nickel metal and soluble compounds should not exceed 0.05 mg/cm³ in nickel equivalents per 40-hour work week. Nickel sulfide fume and dust is believed to be carcinogenic, and various other nickel compounds may be as well.[39][40] Nickel carbonyl, [Ni(CO)4], is an extremely toxic gas. The toxicity of metal carbonyls is a function of both the toxicity of the metal as well as the carbonyl's ability to give off highly toxic carbon monoxide gas, and this one is no exception. It is explosive in air.[41][42] Sensitized individuals may show an allergy to nickel affecting their skin, also known as dermatitis. Sensitivity to nickel may also be present in patients with pompholyx. Nickel is an important cause of contact allergy, partly due to its use in jewellery intended for pierced ears.[43] Nickel allergies affecting pierced ears are often marked by itchy, red skin. Many earrings are now made nickel-free due to this problem. The amount of nickel which is allowed in products which come into contact with human skin is regulated by the European Union. In 2002 researchers found amounts of nickel being emitted by 1 and 2 Euro coins far in excess of those standards. This is believed to be due to a galvanic reaction.[44]

It was voted Allergen of the Year in 2008 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.[45]

Here's the thing.

I wish someone would pull their fingers out and do the long term testing on these things so I could have a list that says

'Smoking, we know gives you this that and this and the risks of certain diseases are blah blah blah. vaping gives you this percent of these tsnas, this much of this and etc...'

So I could truly compare the two, see exactly how much a lesser risk vaping is etc and make a truly informed decision.

Yeah, I know I smoked for years without writing into smoking companies websites and asking them these questions, but the damamge is done now. The climate now is different however and I know exactly what is in my cigs and the risks of certain diseases based on pack years etc.

Just wish I could have the same for vaping, if anything it's the curiosity that kills me!

Would be interesting to know how much if any ozone we are inhaling also as living in a high ozone state such as La or Houston apparently raises your lung disease risk by 30%.

Surely dekang or TW have made enough dough to do the testing by now ;p ...?

Hey perhaps the e-cig manufacturers have tested and know that the nickel in their attys are risk free - but where are the studies? There is so little info about things like this and it annoys me. As well it should everyone. Like I said, I am not saying it is dangerous, I literally have no idea and I would very much like to have an idea.

coronas, ions, electrons, my head spins!

Well, I would also like more information about all this.

Nicotime posted this link in another thread. Metal fume fever - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kinda worrisome to me, as I am in the process of making my own atty with nichrome and ss mesh... Makes me want to experiment with a glass rod instead of a coil.

I know that vaporcast did a few shows where they cited studies comparing vapor to cig smoke, and there was very littleto be concerned about at least in those studies, I'll try to find a link.

There aren’t too many Metals that in some Form, are not Hazardous. But it is the Form they are in that has to be considered.

Metal fumes from Molten Metal. Bad News. There are many Health Problems that people like Welders and Foundry Workers can develop. Vapers? It’s kinda hard to get your Atty hot enough to Melt while Breathing the Fumes.

Metal Dust/Particles. More Bad News. People who work in Metal Fabrication, Machinist, Deburr Worker can have serious Problems. But Vapers don’t Usually Grind on their Attys and then Breath the Dust/Particles.

Metal Oxides. These can be Very Bad. Since Metals Oxidize form on the Boundary Level with Oxygen Very Easily, this can be a Big Problem. With some Exceptions. Chromium and Nickel form Oxides that are consider Very Stable. They are also Very Hard to Remove from the Boundary Surface. So they don’t pose such a Problem that things like Copper or Aluminum Oxides.

So yes, Metals in Many Forms can be a Hazard. Nickel Platting on Atomizers or NiChrome Atomizers Wire, Not Such a Big Hazard in this type of Application.

You Probably have a Much Higher Health Risk from the Silica Fibers used in Wicking Materials. Not to Mention the Ingestion of Food Flavorings that were never meant to be Vaporized or to be Constantly Ingested.

Thanks for the speedy and in-depth reply ZoiD. That is exactly the kind off thing I hoped to hear. And I totally agree about the silica, the little strands are scary to me when I tear apart old attys.

I'm gunna proceed with the plan, which is to wrap my nichrome around my tightly rolled ss 400 mesh about 5 times after oxidizing the whole thing. How does that sound to you all? I think I have it about right in my head, and I have a ton of old attys I've taken apart for pieces.

Sounds like you are on the right road.

Let us know how things work out when you are finished.
