I'm not sure which sub-forum this post belongs under so I'm going to stick it here since, being about taxes, I suppose means it's legal/law by some definitions.
For those who need an added incentive remain off analogs, these numbers showing the tax breakdown (for the UK) are quite illuminating/shocking:
I've based these numbers on a typical premium brand, e.g., Marlboro or Camel:
£___5.60 Sale price
£ 112.07 Duty amount per 1000 cigarettes
£___2.24 = Duty amount per packet of 20
_____24% Duty percent on sale price
£___1.08 = Sale price duty amount
£___3.33 Total duty (per packet + sale price % amount)
___17.5% VAT rate (think it remained at this for cigs even after the VAT change)
£___0.83 VAT amount on sale price
£__4.16 Total duty and VAT 8-o
£___1.44 Price before duty & VAT
__74.27% Percent duty & VAT
Which, for the amount I was smoking and the tax bracket that I fall into meant that I was paying the equivalent tax amount of someone earning £8,000 more than me (although whether I should include VAT in this calculation is a debatable point.)
Food for though...
