No foolin' I've been using the same atty for nearly 3 months now. I do the following for maintenance when the vapor production isn't great (about 1 - 2 weeks):

- soak it in Pepsi Max for 30 min
- rinse then blow out excess liquid both directions
- let it sit upright on my PC fan to dry it out for 20 min
- use a USB passthough and burn it 'til the coil gets red for about 5-7 seconds
- let it cool for several seconds and drop hydrogen peroxide
- let it burn 'til the peroxide boils
- when it turns red put another drop of peroxide in
- repeat the last four steps about 3 times
- repeat the first three steps with the Pepsi bath

I don't know if all this is necessary but it works for me.

That sounds like a very tedious process. But if you have been using the same atty for 3 months that does greatly reduce the cost of smoking these e-cigs... When I did my factoring during my research I had planned to have to buy 30 atomizers a year... And it was still cheaper then smoking... Now that I know I can make them last longer... Wow my eyes have lit up with saved $$$$ signs.

I was searching for a thread I found yesterday on this same question. There someone had recommended Polident 3 Minute for cleaning 510 attys. Sooo, I went out yesterday and picked some up and took two attys that I stopped using and tried to clean them. One wasn't functioning at all and the other had very light vape production.

Steps-

1. Hot water from the tap and one Polident tab and two attys in the bubbly. On other thread they said 10 minutes. I know I was longer since I forgot about them for a bit. When I got back the Polident was still bubbling.

2. Took them out and ran hot tap water over them from both ends.

3. Pushed some canned air at them from the battery side of the atty although I really don't think that was necessary.

4. Let sit with cartridge side down for about 24 hours to let them dry out.

5. Dripped a couple drop in the atty and gave it a try. Nothing. Put a fresh battery on and tried- nothing. Reloaded the cartridge and tried- a bit of vape. About a minute or so later, I thought I had a new atty on. Vapes like a champ.

I was impressed. My thanks to whoever suggested it as I'm off to try to find that thread now. I'm almost two months into this thing and I still haven't had to replace any hardware.

Have had good results with using the method suggested by totally wicked. Blow out the atomizer. Put a few drops of hot water in a clean cart, then put the cart in your e-cig. Then do a few puffs with water in there without inhaling. Top off cart with some more hot water.. repeat. Essentially the atty seems to steam clean itself under it's own power. Without even getting very hot at all. Blow out the atty again. Dry out the stuffing in your car and refill with juice. Throw it on. And vape. Takes a little while to evaporate any remaining moisture in there. But eventually it seems to perform like it's old self.

Your mom said not to say...
Simple really:
1 - Diet Coke bath for 1-2 hrs
2 - Remove from Diet Coke bath and rinse thoroughly, leave out to dry overnight or use hair dryer or compressed N2.
3 - Attach to passthrough if you have one, dip or drip juice on tip and puff without inhaling a few times. What I do is puff without inhaling and get all that initial juice burned off, reapply more juice and it should be ready to rock.

For m401 models instead of Diet Coke use Polident 3 Minute cleaner and follow the rest of the directions as before. I have used these processes on both of mine and it works great. It really helps to have a passthrough to do the initial burn after drying though, sometimes it takes that extra oomph that the USB powered E-Cig has that you can't get from the battery alone.

I was curious about how to clean the wick material, so I took apart an old atty and tried to burn the material to find out what it was made of. To my surprise, an open flame did not melt or burn the wick material, it simply burned off everything and left me with a clean, white, fluffy wick.
I still don't know what it's made of, but am now considering two things:
1) it's made of fiberglass
2) a short burn with a lighter might clean (by burning off) the wick in an old atty
Anyone care to comment?

That is a very interesting finding.

People have been searching for the holy grail of cleaning in order to find something that will actually remove the baked on junk that starts to coat the part of the wick that runs through the coil.

To my knowledge nobody has really found anything that will do so yet.

I can't believe no one ever tried simply using a flame to burn it off, but I don't remember reading about anyone ever trying that. If this really works, it could be somewhat revolutionary!
