Cleaning my battery?

I have a Green Smoke and I've noticed that if I overfill my carts then the battery gets some gunk on the end. I only noticed because after my battery died I plugged it in and the charger said it was fully charged. I noticed the crap on the end and rubbed it off with my shirt. It worked after that.

That method has worked so far, but I was wondering if there's a better way to clean them if it happens again? Can I use a damp paper towel? Suggestions?

If it's an auto battery, be careful not to overfill because liquid getting into the battery will eventually kill it.
