I'd love to hear that from a better recording.

Cliff was the man. I sometimes wonder what Metallica would be if he didn't die. I just don't think they would have gone the direction that has some people calling them a sellout.

I was reading some music forum where some people were blasting him. Their issue seemed to be he wasn't a true bass player, just a lead guitar player using a bass. If you look at metal at that time most bassist were really just doubling the rhythm instead of playing a "true" bass line. Cliff played all three, frequently all in the same song. Look at my favorite Metallica song, "orion". He seamlessly moved from one to the other throughout the song but his "true" bass portions were just more complex than most bass lines.

I know the mastering of Metallica's stuff back then made it hard to really hear what Cliff added to the music so just look up "orion Bass" on youtube to see some examples of people doubling a bass style unlike anyone before him.

He moved the bass from the back to the front! Also until he came along bass solos were mostly jazz based funky stuff. I dont think they sold out Cliff was the driving force behind their sound and or style until he died. That was obvious they gave us several good albums after but fore sure none the quality when he was among us.

I remember calling and asking the local radio station to play Metallica and the DJ actually came on the air and said I dont care how many people call we are not playing them! Funny hu? God forbid they play the music the kids want to hear!

Hetfield has even said Cliff was the one who brought music theory into the writing. The higher complexity when moving from Kill 'em All to Ride the Lightning was Cliff having a classical background. What Cliff taught James forever influenced Hetfield's writing style.

I had a Metallica patch on my jacket since Mater of Puppets was released. A few years later when they finally did a video I had a few people refer to them as "a new band" when seeing my patch, lol.

Two words:

Geddy.

Lee.

I'm not seeing how Geddy compares to Cliff? Don't get me wrong, Geddy is pretty good but I never heard the Canadian play anything like Anesthesia or utilize the lead styles Cliff ripped out on some songs. Geddy's forte is song writing.

No offense, but you're barbecue sucks.. come see me in memphis and I'll show you what real barbeque is!

Let the BBQ wars begin.......

lol. I thought we were trying to eliminate the products of combustion! ;) If you think the sub-ohm vs normal-ohm wars are intense, they have nothing on BBQ.

Apparently ... First up: TX vs TN.

My wife says it is I never been there. This place is called Blanco BBQ it's by Blanco and wurbach.

Have you tried Congers Smoke Shack? It's on 410 and Nacogdoches - best I've found in San Antonio. Haven't tried Blanco yet .. am waiting for the "new restaraunt" excitement to die down - that lot is always packed!
