luuuuuulz. This looks like something I would build...... and it would take me 4 hours to do it. The combination of:
- needing glasses
- old age
- ADD
- insisting that no bulb in my house is over 60 watts
- doggies that find every thing I am trying to focus on the only thing they care about

I know this is kinda old but I don't think I ever laughed so hard at a coil build picture. This made my day along with your description. This is a classic and at some point someone actually made this build, mounted it, and went through with it and wicked it and Vaped on it.
Maybe we can get an update. Some new pictures of horrible funny builds. The opposite of coil porn
Corded (as in rope/cable making) - multiple twisted wires twisted together in the opposite direction. As in cables and ropes, they would be described as 2x2 corded for the simplest examples with 2 twisted pairs twisted around each other, but could in theory go as far as you like - anyone fancy trying a 48AWG 6x4 corded coil? (24 individual wires twisted one way in bunches of 6 then the resulting 4 twisted sets twisted the opposite way around each other). Of course, you could clapton the result (why not?). They'd hold so much juice they'd be almost self-wicking!
Woven flat versions would classify as braids, as it's the interweaving that really distinguishes braids from cords.

A "basic" 2x2 28AWG cord build can be seen in How did you coil/wick/cotton your tank today? where the poster (bwh79) asked if there was a name for it. Having checked around, there does not seem to be a coil-building specific name, so I responded with the rope/cable making one, which seems entirely appropriate, and then came over to update the list here.
You can buy stainless steel (as well as less conductive types) cord from rope-makers/chandlers and the like, but the gauges are a generally bit large for our uses (typical smallest size being around 5mm thick). They also tend to use the words cord and cable interchangeably at the retail level, but that is not unique to that market. Not many people who sell for a living have particularly great product knowledge of their entire range. Most ropes are actually corded, as it reduces twist (or rather, untwist) under tension - as one twist unwinds, the other tightens.
My information originally came from someone who still makes cordage for traditional sailing vessels, using some very old machinery, and has studied the subject from an historical perspective very closely.

I believe taking two twisted wires and twisting them together in the opposite rotation is called a Hive coil
I've been looking for/at different coil builds (basically to learn about prebuilt coils) and a question has popped into my head. These complex builds, such as stove top, lucky dip, and the one that's sanded flat and polished, or basically any "coil porn" builds. Are they actually designed to be vapable or are they just play pretties for bragging rights?
