Just watched a video where they used 32 kanthal for an evod single coil. 5 wraps put it at 1.8 ohms. Is this a good starting point? What is recommended, 28 or 32 kanthal resistance wire?

I'm determined I can do this using cotton wick and have a means to test ohms before using. Any tips?

What clearomizer are you using? An Evod?

Not sure if you are working with an Evod as I've never tried one. But for most other rebuildable atomizer tanks, like a kayfun, you would use 28g Kanthal

An Evod is cramped for space. 28 will work, 30 or 32 will give you more wiggle room.

I like 30 myself. 32 can be a little fragile, 28 is a little harder to fit in there.

Main issue with an Evod head is there is not enough room there to use 28 gauge kanthal and get enough wraps to get a high enough resistance. I would use 32 or maybe 30 gauge.

I think most of the original heads are wrapped with 32 gauge wire.

I use 30 ga and it works pretty good. You'll get a few more wraps and it will fit nicely. Never tried 32 but I want to get as many wraps as possible in the small space you're working with. I'd say if you have 32, use it. If you're buying, get 30 ga.

As a cotton user my view is skewed. Cotton IMO gives more flavor and vapor as it holds/wicks juice more efficiently than silica due to more air space between the fibers. Cotton will burn however, silica you can dry burn if you want with no ill effects.

I use 32 ga. to build in the Kangers. 6 wraps, tight and evenly spaced on a 1/16th drill bit works for me. Easiest way to wick them is to get some Peaches and Cream white 100% cotton yarn from the Walmart and unravel 2 of the 4 strands for wick, just right IMHO.

I also use 32 gauge to build my Kanger with but when building my RBAS I use 28 gauge kathal. The 6 wrap micro coil works wonderful for Kanger coil. I do six wrap on a 3/4in screw driver then compress the coil with tweezers heat with my torch for a few seconds so the coil is glowing red then I temper it by cooling in water. This males a beautiful micro coil which fits so nicely into a Kanger coil. When just learning to build this is a great place to start. Next you might consider a good Rba. Kayfun and kayfun lite are wonderful Rbas to start with. I love mine! They are easy to build, have great flavor and vapor and don't leak! Kayfun is a perfect rba for just starting out! I love mine! Nothing beats it's flavor and it does not leak like some tanks.

Thanks to all for the great advice. I'm 3 weeks into my vaping trek and chasing the ultimate vape. No desire to use tobacco again whatsoever! Your forum has been a wealth of knowledge.

Are the Kayfun clones any good, or should I hold out for the real deal?

There are great clones and so so clones. Ehpro and Hcigar are the better ones. There's one on sale now for $30. I'll see if I can find the link. I bought one even though I already got one.
