While your in the learning stages, buy two rolls of kanthal, when you run out of wire on the first roll buy another as soon as possible.

Running out of wire when you need it is a truly sucky experience.

Same goes for wick material.

As for making the coils themselves, that's not as hard as it might seem.

If you can't see well, a lit magnifying glass is worth the purchase.

If you use silica wicks, make your coils on the correct sized rod, and make a few of them. Then dip one end of the wick in melted candle wax and smooth the tip to a point, this will allow you to thread all of the coils quickly. Then clip off the waxed portion and cut the wick on each coil to a usable length.

If you don't have a helper hands thingy make one. Get an alligator clip with a set screw on the end, big enough to put a clothes hanger or 12 gauge wire into. Bend the wire or hanger into a shape like a cobra ready to strike. Attach the gator clip. Place the lead wires into the clip and now you can burn your fingers and only drop the tweezers.

I too am just getting started, but my third build on my igo-w was a Dragon dual nano coil. It actually worked, and I was pretty proud of it.I took it to the vape shop that turned me on to rebuilding, and they were impressed with the build and how well it worked. But then the girl who works there showed me the build on her trident - super simple dual 6/5 coils with short little cotton wicks in each, and it was absolutely blasting vapor! I realized then that I have a lot to learn, and that a simple, good build can outdo a complicated and finicky one.

Right there you learn one heck of a valuable lesson.

Right there you learned one heck of a valuable lesson. It is entirely possible to get a good vape without going nuts with the build. :)

I run a plain old micro coil + cotton wick 7/8 wraps of 30 gauge on a 16 gauge syringe needle with a little stubby cotton wick through it and blow clouds big enough to have trouble reading my monitor at times. ;)

Ha! The only reason I'm smiling at this is because my very first coil was last night, and the 2nd thing I used to wrap it on was a miniature screwdriver. I had the legs locked into the head when I realized "Crap! I cant get the coil off the end!". It was a flat-head, and the tip was slightly wider than the shaft and I couldn't see it because it was so small.

Had to completely redo it using a nail and I had to use the same wire because that's all I had...

Totally did that. Was such a pretty coil, too. ...... me off.

I agree with Horton, TAKE NOTES. I'm forgetful... I sat one night and built 11 coil heads, using different drill bits, different gauge kanthal and different wrap counts. Wrote down everything. I knew my preference was about a 2.2 ohm, I'm only using a Protank, but there seemed to be more to it, so my notes really helped me with a better vaping experience. Happy Camper.

Myranny, I love the word >sproing< My first micro coil was a >sproing<.

Do your stubby wicks just stick out the ends of the coils, or are they long enough to touch the deck below, to soak up juice?

On my RM2 they just barely touch the deck. On a protank I clip them short just like the stock silica (though I use cotton). On the Kayfun again they just barely touch the deck.
