does anyone have an opinion on weather to bunch all your coils close together right in front of the air intake or space them out to cover as much of the wick as possible i had better luck with the latter

It all depends on how you enjoy your vape. Resistance increases with heat; so, the closer your wraps are to each other, the more intense the vape. (more pronounced flavor, quicker heat-up time, etc.) Also, tightly bunched wraps share and retain heat.

Are you referring to having better luck with hotspots and such, or to what you like?
