Coil & wicking questions with Cotton (not the normal questions I promise)

I finally wrapped a good coil for my dripping rba v3 (hebel) 1.8 ohm 32 awg and silica. It took me literally 2 weeks to get one that not only tasted right, but vaped correctly.

The good little discontent vaporer that I am, I decided to rip it out and put cotton in it (I was unsuccessful just pulling the wick out so had to make a new coil)

Anyways, my question is as follows:

Normally when wrapping a coil with silica, you wrap it, dry burn it, check for hotspots, adjust, and you're ready..

How does one check for hot spots and an even glow when cotton is involved?! Is that even possible? The only thing I could think of was wrapping it with silica, checking it, then pulling it out and sliding cotton strands through it. Is this my only option?

I ask because I wrapped the coil, checked the ohms, marinated it in juice and vaped it (with all the pieces off of it it seemed to vape well) But once re-assembled, the taste was there, but the vapor was not good at all. I tried blindly playing with the coils, moving the wick around, away and infront of airhole to no avail. Ugh. What do I do?

Thanks in advance!

With cotton, I don't even check for hot spots. I dry burn my coil (w/o wick) and then insert my cotton. Cotton swells a LOT when it's saturated with nicotine goo, so insert what feels like a fairly loose wick. If your coils are all nice and even, it will likely work just fine with no hot spots. With a new wick (if you're uneasy about hot spots) check frequently, and if you notice more discoloration around one part of the wick than on another, you may have a small hot spot.
