Hi,

I am new to vaping (just about 3 weeks). Since staring to vape, I am experiencing issues of dry lips, cold sores and general dehydration. I started by ordering a starter kit from "SmokeTips" using 16mg nic and within 2 weeks I have already had 2 back to back cold sores and also feel a bit dehydrated. It can't be from the sudden stop of analogs because I still smoke about 5 a day.

I have searched the forum and found some posts that lead my to believe It maybe the amount of "VG" I am using. (Possible allergic reaction?)

I have 2 questions

1:What is the PG to VG ratio for the standard cartridges? (The only option I have from Smoketips and Vape4 life is choosing the nicotine level and flavor).

2: Are there any vendors that allow you to order either the cartridges or juice with the option of specifying the PG to VG ratio in addition to the nicotine level and flavor?

Any Help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum- I found this for you in the health section.

2. Mouth Ulcers
The Quit Ulcers are a common symptom of tobacco withdrawal, affecting many quitters. The ulcers can be very painful, but there are effective topical treatment gels. It has been suggested that high-dose vitamin therapy may also be effective.

It may be possible that nicotine being absorbed through the mouth can also exacerbate this, as folks using nicotine gum have experienced these mouth sores although it would need to be shown that those using nic skin patches did not suffer so commonly.

It may be that after ecig use, at first, drinking something to rinse the mouth out may help. This will get the nic (or perhaps flavorings or other materials) out of your mouth and not give it a chance to sit there and irritate your mouth tissues and make any sore worse, if this is in fact an issue.

Admin note
Note that PG is a bactericide and used medically for that purpose, so that it is more likely to improve this type of symptom than worsen it. It is unlikely that ecig vapor from an e-liquid with PG in will affect the Quit Ulcers in any way except beneficially.

However: Cinnamon is known to cause this problem in some people.

I found this regarding VG

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/health-safety-e-smoking/66310-chapped-lips-cold-sores-vg.html

I believe most prefilled cartomizers are 100% PG. V4L does have VG cartomizers but I almost positive more prefilled are PG.

If you wanted a mixture of pg/vg you could always purchase juice and fill them yourself. Get the empty cartos from V4L and some juice. The Smoke Tip and V4L are KR808's. Bloog and Volt are also KR808's and they do sell prefilled cartos but I assume they're PG as well.

Halo sells prefilled cartos for their pv but they don't really tell you want their pg/vg ratio is. You could email them and ask.

I'm thinking though up to this point you have been vaping 100% PG.

You really need to up the water a great deal when your vaping!

Some foods cause allergic reactions for me. Maybe it is some of the ingredients in the flavor you are using.

Someone in the juice section has food allergies and had trouble with some Vg juices but not others. So it could be the flavorings as well.

I guess you'd have to get 100% vg and 100pg to tell.

Actually, cold sores can be the result of any type of de-toxing, even from cigarettes. The dry lips and dehydration are from vaping because both PG and VG are dehydrating. Increasing the amount of water you drink will help with this.

I have searched the forum and found some posts that lead my to believe It maybe the amount of "VG" I am using. (Possible allergic reaction?)

The incidence of allergic reactions to PG and VG are very low. Cold sores and dehydration do not equal an allergic reaction.

I have 2 questions

1:What is the PG to VG ratio for the standard cartridges? (The only option I have from Smoketips and Vape4 life is choosing the nicotine level and flavor).

Most prefilleds are 100%VG.

2: Are there any vendors that allow you to order either the cartridges or juice with the option of specifying the PG to VG ratio in addition to the nicotine level and flavor?

I don't know of any vendors who allow you to choose the PG/VG amounts when ordering prefilleds. I would suggest that you order blank cartos and some juice and fill your own. That way, you can choose the flavors and PG/VG mixes that you want.

Any Help would be appreciated.

The V4L ratios of PG/VG are proprietary, but people have posted in the V4L Forum that they are roughly:

Cool Carts/Premium: 80% PG/ 20% VG
WOW Cartos: 70% PG/30% VG

And yes, they do have 100% VG prefilled cartos.

I found this. Someone speculated about the ratio but the supplier just said 'some' VG

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...filled-carts-pg-vg-ratio-etc.html#post2715814

I can see why a supplier wouldn't give someone the actual recipe for one of their juices, but I don't understand not revealing how much PG or VG is in it. That just defies reason and I'm sorry, but "some" VG just doesn't cut it for me. High levels of PG just don't sit well with me, so for a vendor to not provide this information really kind of ticks me off!

I'm not exactly "allergic" to PG in the classic sense, but I am a bit sensitive, which is very different from allergic. Before anyone jumps all over this, I can also tell you that I'm sensitive to shellfish. I can still eat shrimp and lobster, but I have to be careful about how much I eat. If I eat too much, then I'll end up with hives on my neck and chest. I don't have the same type of reaction with PG, but if the level is more than 60% I get mild headaches. I do well with 60% or less in my juice.

I have cold sores/fever blisters that appear about every 5 years or so...when I quit analogs I had two within the first 2 weeks...my guess is it must be related to analog detox/ecig dehydration...along with other symptoms of analog detoxing.

Not sure if more water would have helped with the cold sores/dry lips/sore throat...all an analog detox symptom...but more water is recommended when vaping and is good for your health in general.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have stopped vaping until the cold sores heal. BTW the cold sores were on the side of my mouth that I would vape.(If that helps)

Then I will slowly ease back into it. I will let everyone know how "Take 2" works out. (Maybe a week or so)

whatever U decide..please dont go back to analog..i tough it out..sooner all yr problem will fade away..U get "bonjela" antiseptic cream..but ulcers takes a while to heal..regards mafig

Replace the white cap of the cartomizer with a plastic or delrin drip tip. I get mine at LiteCigUSA.net - 510/901/KR808D-1 drip tips.

That will spread out the stream of vapor into a wider stream and depending how you vape it could bring the vapor in further in your mouth, further away from your gums and lips.

I buy WOW juices and they truly don't seem like 70PG/30Vg to me, but maybe they are thinned. They seem more the thickness of 80PG/20VG or even 90PG/10VG. I will say the WOW juices in a WOW carto can pack quite a hit. So I also recommend you consider trying one nicotine level lower if you are currently getting more than enough TH.

And something else - if they are REAL cold sores and you have gotten cold sores before, then it could be from the loss of one or more of the 4000 chemicals in cigarettes. If they are just sores, then it is probably the nicotine. PG lets the flavor, TH of nicotine and irritation of nicotine through the best. But in general, at least for slim ecigs, high PG juices work best in cartos as far as not clogging them up and get good reuse out of carto. I won't put more than 20% VG juices in my cartos except for Vapor4Life WOW juices because even if they are 70PG/30VG (which IMO they neither vape like - not enough vapor - nor pour like) they have plenty of liquidy flow for good carto life.

cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus...not vaping:)...but if that gives you more peace of mind.
Cold Sores are herpes simplex, see a Doctor.
These things are more likely canker sores, it is not known what causes them, but some believe it to be the tissue in the mouth "over healing" an injury or agitation.
2 completely different things.

Vapeing doesn't "cause" the sores, but can agitate it.

High Nic, High PG, Juice splattering, dehydration, Cinnamon flavoring, dental work, spicy food, acidic food, some oral care products, accidentally biting your cheek, etc, etc... there are many things that agitate canker sores.

Drink water, consider using higher VG content or lowering Nic content, take vitamin D and B12, and possibly see a doctor.
There are several threads on this here, there are people that might suggest certain mouthwashes which may not be a bad idea.
