I'm really loving my Halo Triton. However I seem to have made some sort of transition where I am only getting really harsh hits. They make me cough after nearly every puff. This is with the Tribeca at 12mg which was really smooth when I first started but now just tears up my throat. I cleaned my tanks and even used a new tank with no luck. I steeped the juice for 2 weeks but doubt it needed it since it had that wonderful Tribeca smell out of the bottle. I'm just curious if getting coil replacements at a lower resistance would help. Or should I try the 6mg strength to lessen the throat hit. I would appreciate any advice because I loved this juice initially but after all this I'm back on the cancer sticks. Please help!

you are using a new out of the wrapper tank? or one that was used before and cleaned and new to the juice?

Are you using a standard 650mh battery? Or one with variable voltage? What coils are you using? Ive heard Tribeca likes lower volt/higher resistance.
Whens the last time you changed the coils?

The only time ive had really bad draws with the Tribeca, is when the wicks and coils are burnt.
I would suggest taking the coil out of the tank, loosen and pull the rubber condom sleeve up a little bit (not completely off). Give the bottom wick a little twist to make it tighter/smaller in diameter, and slide it gently out to the one side to see the part that normally sits inside the coil. If its burnt, then thats the reason. A temparary fix is to leave the burnt side out of the middle and leave some unburnt wick inside and it should get you to limping until you can get replacement coils.
Repeat with the top wick.
Slide the coil condom back down so the hole in the top is snug around the top "nipple"

You could also give the coils a good dry burn to get all the burnt gunk off there too.

If thats what it is, and you are using a regular battery, then maybe some replace coils in 2.6-2.8 would work better for you.

I agree with absolute's comments.

Try vaping with a battery with half it's charge. And try this. Start your draw, then hit the button. If you normally take a 4 second hit, reduce it to 3 seconds. Then release the button and still draw for a bit. This tends to keep the coil from cooking the juice too much.

And don't do a lung hit. Draw it into your mouth, then pull it in if you want. But don't force the vape. Let a bit of time go to let the vape deliver.

And I would get some other juices as well. I know you smoke one kind of cig, but try vaping a few different juices. And adding some Fusion might help.

And drink more water. These juices dehydrate you.

Don't get discouraged. There's been days where I thought the vape was so harsh. Best of luck to you.

Coils at a lower resistance burn hotter if you like a warm vape, coils at the higher resistance burn cooler. For me Tribeca straight out of the bottle is good. A lower nic level will reduce the throat hit but 12 where your at isn't a bad throat hit. Does this happen with other flavors you use at 12mg? I have to switch between 3 or 4 flavors a day or my taste buds become numb to the flavor. :)

I just hate that you needed to go back to smoking. Give us more information so we can help you better. :)

The 12mg Malibu sample is smooth and I haven't had any issues with harshness. I do inhale it straight to my lungs though and I'm kinda getting the impression that is the wrong way to vape. I am honestly not certain what you guys mean in regards to a warm or cool vape. I have only used the coils that were included with my tanks so far. Doesn't feel like taste buds are off or anything because I still love the smell and taste of Tribeca. It's just so harsh on my throat. Are you supposed to hold the vapor in your mouth for a few seconds and then inhale? I know all of the getting the nicotine part of vaping is absorbed throughout the mouth, right?

I am not sure what halo triton is, but if it's a atomizer you have access to the coil with without breaking your device I recommend. Placing a small amount of cotton over Half the coil it makes it much less harsh I have noticed from experience. Also a word of reference devices with a coil much closer to your drip top will be much more harsh rather than something like a langer tank because the vapor has less distance to travel making it hotter vape and in turn a harsher inhale. Hope that kind of helped in some way

In regards to the hot cool vape, if you use coils rated at a lower resistance (1.8) the vapor will be a higher temperature than using coils at a higher resistance (2.6)
Basic electronics, more power = more temperature. More resistance lowers power, thereby lowering temperature

The stock coils that come with the tanks are 2.2-2.4 for reference

That look in the new person section of the forums, there are several stickies about technique.
But seems most draw into the mouth like a cigar, holds it for a few seconds, then you can inhale into the lungs and exhale via nose. Noted to be the best way to get the nicotine

as Absoluttalent provided this is the most popular method of vaping.

Things to note.... Smoke particles are a lot smaller than vaping particles, they wont go down as far into your lungs bronchiales as smoke will. So dont try to inhale as deeply. Vaping is more akin to smoking a cigar. Holding in the mouth, then if you wish a shallow lung inhale, and then out through the nose. The nose part is important, because your blood vessels are so close to the surface there, that the nicotine can more easily get into your blood stream.

Because of the above mentioned differences, it is important that you understand that the nicotine enters your system far slower than with ciggies, when you first make the switch you will occasionally find you sort of over nic yourself, because you are so used to that instant gratification, toke cig, feel the "high".... with vaping, especially at first it can take minutes before you do get the "high", and because of that you keep hitting the vape until you do feel something.

Hope this helps.

Fallen nailed it, one other thing to consider...

You said you cleaned your tanks. Does this include cleaning the wicks/coil (which is far more crucial), or trying a brand new coil assembly?

As they gunk up it becomes much more harsh, as you are re-heating the elements/build up that has been left behind. Don't let the wicks darken too much before cleaning/swapping.

I suggest mouth to lung inhales with these devices, similar to analogs but with a longer mouth pull.

I have had similar problems over time. I sometimes get really dry nasty hits even with a new coil. I have cleaned and all the other stuff and have just determined that it's bad coils. Most of my dry hit problems was with a newly charged battery. With a new good coil, I'm in vaping heaven but with one that I believe is bad, I get the nasty dry hits. My solution from now on is to just throw out those coils that give me dry hits and quit trying to fix them. It's so annoying to get a freshly charged battery and new coil and get nasty dry hits. So from now on, I will throw those away, new or not, and just clean the ones that work like champs on fresh or old batts.

This to me sounds like a wicking issue, not a "bad" coil. If the coil fires on, it's working properly.

In these top coil tanks the wicks that feed the coil must be kept wet or you will get burnt dry hit. Try turning the tank upside down and let it saturate the coil.

I buy the 2.6-2.8 coils because I like it cooler but I do use the standard 2.2-2.4 that comes in the tank. I've had some coils that I had to suck harder on without firing the battery to sorta prime the coil but not so hard as to flood it and get it to wick properly for about the first 1/4 of the tank but after that I've never gotten a coil that didn't work well at all. Most are good for me as soon as I let a fresh coil sit after I fill it up with juice and let it wick for about 15 minutes but I only do this on a fresh coil.

This is exactly what I am wondering, if his impatience sometimes doesnt give a new coil enough time to suck up and wick enough juice to the coil point. It takes 2 to 5 minutes for a juice to properly prime in a Triton tank. Depending on how cold or hot the room is, and which juice.

I agree.

The other element in this is the inner condom. If it is too tight on the wicks, you get poor wicking to the coil. Too loose, and it floods and gurgles.
