I see now...its searching the 3.5 floppy drive...I guess I have to make some disks
It doesn't matter if you clear all the CMOS and passowrd. Do them both. Get a new cdrom and boot from the windows cd, that is a must!! hit enter to boot from cd, by pass the first request to run repair and then hit F8 to continue. The cd should scan for an operating system and find your c:\windows installation and ask whether you should repair it. hit R for repair. It will replace all the windows system files and after that you should be able to boot to safe mode.... Run Malewarebytes and your antivirus prog. If it finds something then reboot into regular mode and run it until it comes clean..... then got to windows update and install all updates, If that doesn't fix it then you will have to back up you data and reformat the drive and reinstall windows XP. I'll have to try a different cd drive tomorrow...I tried two xp cd's and neither work.

Definate sign theres something wrong with the cd drive if it dont read a couple xp cds.
make sure you test your xp cd's on a working machine first and make sure they are bootable before you go and buy a new one only to find out you had bad cd's
Yeah I have like 4 Dells here I can scavenge a cd unit from...let you know tomorrow.
Dell used to have recovery partitions on the HDD. Try Ctrl-F10 at post/boot up and if there is a recovery partition it will load a GUI with options to restore the OS.
Ok...changed the cd drive and I can get to the command prompt in the recovery mode and I can get the directories but I cant run anything but the system commands. How do I get the Smitfraudfix.exe to run I have on a USB drive? Or get it to run in safe mode which still will not run?
Update...I managed to run the windows repair and now it starts in safe mode and says windows setup cannot run in safe mode. I think its because I have the safe mode box checked in the boot ini tab in msconfig. Any way around this before windows loads??
are you trying to re-install xp?
if you wanna fix the boot, get into the recovery console (windows repair) with the xp disk.
Type "fixmbr" to fix the master boot record and "fixboot" with no parameters to fix you main drives boot.
If you have disabled your hard drives to get the cd rom to boot like i said before (that was mainly to test the drive) reinable them before trying the above method.
also to run your smitfraud, get in the recovery console as well, and you should be able to cd to your usb drive (ex. cd c:\)

I cant get anything to run there except system commands. I can get the dir to com up but I cant run anything once there

Fixmbr may damage your partition tables if you proceed.
This could cause all the partitions on the current HD to become inaccessible.
Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?
Well at least I'm not the only idiot...I found this on a computer forum and it hasnt been answered....

The PC rebooted into safe boot but I cannot log on since I dont have the
admi password..
Since I was unable to log on via safeboot mode I then decided to reboot into
normal mode.
The problem is such that because safeboot is ticked on msconfig it is not
possible to reboot into normal mode because the pc reboot automatically into
safeboot mode...
The pc is caught into a Loophole which cannot be broken unles I manage to
untick the parameter from msconif...
Any way I can sort out this problem please?"

Also remember that I had just run the repair on the win cd and it said to remove any cd and it restarted...but it wont continue because its opening in safe mode and it says it cant run in safe mode. So I am assuming that its still trying to complete the repair right? Will messing with the MBR now affect that?
Well I did both FIXMBR and FIXBOOT on C: and it still starts in safe mode and says....windows xp setup cannot run in safe mode. Setup will restart now.
