You need a calculator to fully appreciate the mixing required. I use this one:

It's not at all uncommon for me to add X drops of a simple flavor to a bottle, shake the heck out of it, and drip a few drops. Add more if necessary.
To each their own. Different flavors have differing strengths. So it's very much a "recipe" type of thing if you want to reproduce it again. Take notes and count drops. Or measure.
