#1 entry (Something great someone did for me.) Sorry, but the beginning is sad.

In 2007, I was unemployed and living in Queens, NY. I'd flown home to St Louis for a visit, which zapped all of my extra funds. I returned home to Queens on a Saturday. The next morning, I woke up to a huge lot of text messages telling me to call my mom. Late Saturday/early Sunday, my brother had passed away.

I had no way to fly back. It was the worst day of my life. I was telling some friends about what had happened, and one of them, a woman I'd met in a game I play online, and only had met one time in the real world... she used her frequent flyer miles to get my ticket. She demanded that I never ever pay her back. She refused any attempt on my part. Without her, I'd have been stuck in Queens while my entire family dealt with their grief.

1st entry: I am in a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury. I drive a pickup with hand controls that has a crane in the back which electronically lifts my chair into the bed for me. Back in December 2004, not long after I had gotten my license, I was driving to work and got rear ended at a stop light. She barely even tapped my bumper as a result of the icy roads. So this poor woman was horrified because she saw my wheelchair in the back of the truck. So she ru s up to my window hysterically crying, appologizing up and down and asked me if I was okay. Now it takes a lot to get me upset! I wasn't hurt, my truck barely had a scratch on it. So I said to her "Yes, I am alright, although I can't feel my right leg". She gets an even more horrified look on her face and then I told her "Everything is fine, I couldnt feel my right leg before this" while smiling. That did it! Not only did I get her to stop crying, I even got a smile and a laugh out of her! We exchanged information, even though both of our vehicles were fine, mine the cover of one of my tail lights, but that was an inexpensive fix, so we didnt contact insurance. She called me repeatedly over the next couple of weeks to see how I was doing and she even sent me a Christmas card. She was one of the sweetest ladies that i've ever met!!

This may not seem happy, but it is to me.
This is a pic of my mother and my daughter.

My mother died of breast cancer about 2 months after her only granddaughter was born (about 6 weeks after this pic).
She had 3 grandsons and no granddaughters before my girl, and had so very much wanted a granddaughter.
She was so excited when we told her that the ultrasound showed that we were having a girl!

Towards the end of her life, she was getting so weak and worn, but she held on until her granddaughter was born.

I am so very very endlessly grateful and happy that she got to hold her granddaughter and see herself in my baby girl's eyes before she died....

#1. There have been so many wonderful people that have helped me in my life and I will get to them. This time I was able to be on the giving end and I have never felt so wonderful in my life.

This happened about 13 years ago. My beautiful David, my soulmate, my husband of many years was trajically killed in an auto accident. It was indeed horrible. I mourned him for 2 years before I would even come out of my house. I was a complete and total basket case. Finally I got where I liked going out. I went places with my parents, my sister and finally I discovered I liked just going out by myself for a drive, listening to the radio, especially at night. My parents always worried for me, but I promised not to stop except in town at the drive in for a burger or something, so they relented. I did have grown children after all. Even though I have no money now, I did have some then and always carried my secret "mad money" which was a folded up $100 dollar bill, inside the little secret pocket to my wallet. In any case, on this night it was too late for shopping or anything else.

It was around 10 p.m. or close to it. I couldn't sleep, was restless, so took myself for a drive.
I had gone up on the freeway and just listening to music and lost in thought, and just as suddenly put my blinker on and pulled over. I did not think about it. I did not decide whether it was wise or dangerous and anything about it. I just pulled over. The sight that was before me was heart wrenching and sad and beautiful all at the same time. A young couple were hitch hiking, which is totally against the law on the freeway. He was standing above her, valiantly waving his arm to request a ride and she was slumped down, sitting on an old suitcase, with her head down in her arms. It looked for all the world like some kind of Norman Rockwell painting except it was late at night. He ran over and said, "Lady, I can't even imagine why you stopped, but I am so hoping you are here to give us a ride." I told him I was and please get his lady into the car as quickly as possible, that they were at a dangerous place on the freeway and liable to get picked up by the police. While he was fetching her into the car, I got a better look at them. He was 20ish and medium built with sandy hair and she was all of about 17 or 18 maybe, a tiny thing, extremely frail and about 6 months pregnant. We were about 30 miles from town, so we talked as we drove. I asked him when was the last time they had anything to eat and he looked embarrassed and said yesterday evening. He then burst into this bizarre story about how he had gotten laid off and a friend had promised him a job if he would come to Texas. They had spent all their money to get there and then the friend told him he couldn't get him a job after all and they would have to leave. He talked and talked and I saw in the rear view that his lady had fallen asleep. I asked him if he knew how tired his wife was and he started crying and said, she is really tired. We were coming into town and I pulled into Sonic which was only thing open then and ordered them food. It was all kind of strange and surreal, but at the same time, very very real. They told me they were headed to some town outside Fort Worth, I think. Close to there anyway. And now they knew they could make it. I assured them that they would as I drove them to the bus station. I pulled my cell out and told them to both call their parents and tell them that they were getting on a bus. They did so. I gave him my folded up $100 bill, as I pulled into the bus station and told him to come out and show me the tickets, he did. They both cried and asked me how they could pay me back. I told them to be good to each other and someday look up and see somebody in need and to think of me when they helped. I left them both with smiling faces as I drove home. And as I came into my home, I heard my David say, You did good baby, you did good.




Lee, there are times when I wonder if you were are triple blessed with the fairy goodness in life........

and then times like this when I know it.
