The first cotton balls I tried were some of unknown origin that I used straight out of the bag (they were in a sealed plastic Ziploc baggie in my first aid box). It tasted nasty, but it was my fault.

I bought a bag of organic cotton balls at Walgreen's, boiled a handful for ten minutes in filtered water and let them sit overnight on a paper plate with a paper towel over the top (just to keep the dust off) and they were good to go!

I've never tried them unboiled, but they may be just fine.

I only use Koh Gen Do 100% Pure Cotton. No chemicals, no boiling, no break-in. Plus, it's a lot easier to work with than cotton balls, I just peel the pad in half and cut to size. I wouldn't use anything else.

"Made from 100% cotton that has not been chemically treated, bleached or pigmented. Raised without the use of chemical fertilizer or pesticides to ensure pure, safe quality."
