So I've used Silica and Ekowool in my Kayfuns and while they are fantastic, I recently went and bought some organic cotton balls. After re-wicking with cotton, it is hands down the best flavour and wicking I've experienced so far. My only concern though is the amount of pesticides and other processing chemicals which are used in the manufacturing of cotton. Although "organic" cotton is suppose to be pesticide free, I'm not entirely sure what other types of chemicals it may contain.

Maybe I'm over thinking this but just thought I'd get some views for anyone that may know a bit more about it than I do.

Hi doghouse from another GTA'er and welcome to ECF.

I started experimenting with cotton and micro coils about a month ago. Used cotton from Q-tips at first and have now moved on to gauze. I find gauze lasts a lot longer. I did a bit of reading before I tried cotton. My take is that if you use organic materials you will be fine. You can boil anything and it will not make it worse (so that can only make it better). IMO, considering the amount of cotton that is exposed to the coil, whatever chemicals are on it are probably not going to harm me. But that's just me and my :2c:

But you're not worried about Ekowool or Silica production?

Basically put... you're being paranoid.

Also, I don't get the whole boiling thing... you're using a device that heats a coiled piece of metal to the point of it turning bright red to vaporize a liquid.

So what does boiling the cotton do that the heated coil doesn't? That's an honest question. Maybe I'm missing something here?

Kayfun best RBA out IMHO with cotton wicks its the way to goI just use regular sterile cotton balls which kayfuns do you have?

I have a couple of Kayfun 3.1 (brushed). Agreed, they are amazing. I also just got a Hercules which is much more work in terms of setup and can be finicky but once it's setup right, it gives the Kayfun a run for it's money. Also got a Taifun GT on the way, have heard great things about it.

Thanks Ryedan. I will give gauze a try. I've been boiling the cotton which may nor may not actually have any impact but it gives me some peace of mind.

You're right, probably just being paranoid but I figured it never hurts to ask. I think the boiling probably doesn't do much other than maybe provide some peace of mind (rightfully or otherwise).

Boiling the cotton is supposed to remove anything in or on the cotton, leaving any chemical or foreign matter in the water so that it doesn't get atomized and inhaled with the E liquid.

I own many kfl's to me they are the best out at the time IMOP. I use ekowool witch I put over gas stove flames before use to rid any bad taste 1st,cotton balls wright out of bag into coil works great no boil. The organic I had to boil the smell on it is nasty, the boil does get rid of smell though all work great! It is funny how paranoid we can get about chemicals, but when we smoked cigs how many chemicals in them????

What you are missing is, those toxins hopefully didn't make it into your device after boiling.

It's always OK to ask. We don't have 20 years of data on this stuff to give perfect answers though.

Boiling supposedly washes off any water soluble oils/chemicals and dilutes them. It's not the heat so much as the dilution/cleaning effect. However the medical grade stuff should be pretty clean already (and sterile).

But hey, if you're all worried about pesticides, you should see what's in most food.

I usually use cotton balls straight from the bag for wicks. Then again, I use silica too. So meh. The silica I build and then rinse the whole RBA and dry before use (due to shards 'n stuff).
