You can come pretty close to the same objective by replacing the silica flavor wicks on a new coil with cotton. I use a slightly longer length than the existing silica because I have a lot of high VG juices and I want good flow of juice across the coil. It's not exactly the same as a 100% cotton wick, but there's not enough of a difference for me to go through a full rebuild.

I really dislike the fact that stock Evods come with 2.5Ω coils and such puny flavor wicks. For most first time users, they're hooking it up with a 3.7v unregulated battery and that's a bit cool for optimum performance. Something south of 2.2 would be so much better.

You don't need to test fire. If you build it right and test it with a multimeter, you know you don't have a short and you know what your resistance is. Build it, test it, vape it.

It's always a good idea to let the cotton wick absorb liquid first. After rebuilding the coil itself, place a drop of liquid right in the middle of the coil. Lay the flavor wicks down, dab those with another drop. Then fill your tank, close it, give it a few minutes to fully saturate and you're good to go.

Here are my pigtail cheesecloth flavor wicks. This is on a ~2.0 coil that I rebuilt weeks ago. I just replaced the flavor wicks today.

As mentioned above, I use a lot of high VG liquids and getting flow to the coil is important. This also helps prevent dry burning which, once it happens, is the end of the build. The trick is, long flavor wicks are good on BCC's, but too long and you risk getting them tangled in the threads of an Evod or MT3/S. This is just about right.
