So I wanted to try this whole e-cig thing out. I didn't want to spend alot of money on my first one so I bought a 30 dollar starter kit off ebay. It is from a company calling itself Health e-cigarettes. Well I got it in the mail, and the product looks like a solid unit. And they provided medium nic cartridge refills. So I charged it, took my first hit and coughed violently. Ok did it again, and the same effect. I am taking 3-5 second draws, when I inhale I don't have any problems but when I exhale I feel a tickle in my throat and lungs and just start coughing. Enough to make me dizzy. I want to know, is it just because its a cheap e-cig? Is it the vapor itself? I really don't know, but before I spend 80-150 dollars on an e-cig I wanted to see if it was any good. Any suggestions?

Hmm...

The vapor is different than smoking. A friend of mine likes to puff on my e-cig. He coughs EVERY single time LOL But then again, he straight drags it like its a joint or something

I just got a new kit in the mail yesterday and I was coughing on it too... Until I put my favorite juice in that is.

So... It may just be the liquid thats in the thing.

PM me your address and I'll send you over some liquid to try out. We'll see if that's the issue.

PV's (personal vaporizers) definitely have a learning curve. There is primer on new atomizers that you initially taste and is nasty. I agree with Rita that using the cart with your own liquid would be a good test and start. Most members do not like the liquid that comes in the carts and prefer using liquid to re-fill the carts.

The DSE901 or the 801 are probably the most used and consistent PV's from members on this forum.

Chances are, its as Rita says.... and it could just be the juice your using (or lack "of it" in the carts you got).

Another good chance, as is quite common with a new e-cig, more specifically, the new atomizer and its factory "primer" thats on it. Most find it has a horrible taste to it and have found that it takes a few days to get rid of it before the vapor smooths out in taste and impact.

I also found that every device when you have fully charged the battery up and you attach your atomizer and cartridge, that you should just leave the e-cig sit a few minutes, then take a small puff, then let sit a few minutes again, to allow the atomizer to "wick" a bit of the cartridge juice.

The only sure way to avoid doing that would be to drip a drop of juice on the atomizer bridge to pre-moisten it.

Just some more food for thought.

My GF says the same thing. she coughs on the exhale(seems very common.) I think it's mostly about how you are hitting it. Vaping is different then smoking IMHO(at first anyway.) Don't hit it like a cig. Try inhaling lightly. Also try pulling the vapor into your mouth...then your lungs. Honestly alot of the time when i am casual vaping i hit it more like i would a hooka.

After vaping for a little while i am able to take deep hits(when i am really nic fitting.) Usually though, i just enjoy the taste and pull the vapor partially into my lungs.

Play around with it a bit and get back to us.

If you did not clean-out or burn-off the package-fluids (I believe are machine oils)...

You will cough as if you just inhaled auto-exhaust fumes from a car with a leaky oil-gasket.

If you have already puffed, only puff into your mouth, and spit afterwards. If you have time, clean the atomizer with alcohol, to flush out the mineral-oils, and rinse with water. Allow it to dry for a good 12 hours, or heat it with a hair-dryer, and let it dry in the sun for about an hour.

If you have puffed more than five times, chances are, there are no more oils left. Puff a few more times into your mouth only... Spitting between puffs. You will get the same nicotine if you inhale, or just let it sit in your mouth. (It only hits you faster if you inhale. Due to the larger surface-area and blood-contact. It is the same for any drug.)

The taste goes away, and you will eventually notice the actual flavor of the cartridge juice. Invest in some good juice. There are many great reviews here in the forums.

NOTE: I can confirm that the "White box", "Cigarette" devices have an oil in the atomizer. I can not confirm if it is "Machine oils", "Mineral oils", or just standard "Package oils". The oils are used to preserve the metal surfaces from corrosion and rust. Apparently they are all over the coil and coil-mesh. You can confirm they are oils with the "Brown paper bag test", or with a water test. (The oils will not dry on the bag, leaving the bag translucent indefinitely, when compared to a drop of water on the same bag, when the water has dried away. The oils will also float on top of the water.)

Some e-bay and internet sites tell you to blow out the oils or juice before use. Oils require a little more than that, for removal.

I also feel a bit of silicone slickness after the oil is absorbed by the bag-test. (This is similar to a teflon-silicone-oil.)

Might be primer juice from the factory, does it have a nasty taste?

wow guys thank you, the more I've been playing with it the less coughing I've been doing. Though, I'm a menthol smoker normally and the carts that came I think were tobacco flavored(actually I think it tastes like Peanut Butter) I never would have thought it was manufacurers oil. I find if I take shorter bursts I don't cough like I was. And I think whatever it was causing me to cough is burning off of the atomizer. Again, I appreciate the feedback.

this is really making me wonder about the funky taste on my new 901, which I don't like very much. I still have yet to go a full day with no analogs yet b/c of this. Initially I thought the cart it came loaded with was blueberry flavor, and so as soon as my menthol juice arrived I changed it (was very paranoid about filling a blank cart for the 1st time, used about 7 drops, hope it's right!) But it STILL tastes like a strange blueberry and I'm also afriad too smoke it too much b/c of previous dizzy feeling and it being 36 mg juice. But if you all think it's the atomizer needing to be broken in and this will change, I can hang in there. Also wonder if I should switch to lower mg juice so that I can puff more often and not worry about dizzyness, spaciness?

LiLi, I have found the 36mg juice to be very potent and if I'm not careful I begin to get a nasty headache. If you find you enjoy vaping frequently; like chain smoking, you might want to cut back on that nicotine. Even 18mg can be high unless you are a heavy smoker. I find using around 11mg to be comfortable and use the higher dose for those times I really need it, like fist thing in the morning. Some people like to buy the higher nicotine and cut it with glycerin. Saves money! Check out the threads in the DIY e-liquid section of the site, under Tips and Tricks. Tons of great info there.

Also I would agree that the funky taste is probably the primer. I started using a new atomizer yesterday. All day I thought it had a cherry taste to it... but weird cherry. This was following all of those primer puffs. I've used this new atomizer a lot since then. It still has a slightly off taste but is getting better.

i started with this model. All in one pack, holder, charger. Not the best tasting carts. Taste like cardboard too me. Mabe get some low nic liquid in a flavor you like. Quality liquid is alot smoother. You will grow out of that little super mini model fast. Mabe upgrade to a dse-901. Will last longer and the carts taste good. Avail in menthol too.

thanks scintar and everyone, I found through my day that I could take the vapor alot easier, I still cough some but it doesn't feel so powerful, and if I take quick hits off of it instead of the long drag, its not bad. I also noticed that the carts for this have a tiny hole for the vapor and I wonder if I drilled it out a little it may help bring more vapor making it smoother than it is along with different juice. Thanks again everyone!

Do you know if it was used already? If it wasn't you could actually be coughing because of the primer solution they used on the atomizer. It might take a bit to get that nasty gunk off. I know that until I learned to puff I coughed a bit, because I was trying to smoke it like a regular cig, but it just doesn't quite work that way.

These are just a few things, also.... for about the first week after I started vaping, I noticed that my smokers cough in the morning was pretty much gone, but then I started hacking up all the nasty stuff from my lungs. So it was a good and bad thing. Good that it was getting out of my lungs, horrible that I was seeing what I had put into my lungs.

I would say give it just a bit of time and see if you get used to it, because I am sure that you coughed a bit when you started smoking and your body had to adjust to that too. :) In the long run this is so much better for your body.:)

right now I am smoking about half and half, just trying to get used to the e-cig and see if it will work. I think most of the primer has worn off and I am getting used to it, if I take shorter 2-3 second hits for the first few puffs and then a 5 second hit I don't cough at all. I am also going to probably get a different e-cig, with better carts cuz this stuff tastes like crap and the carts run out EXTREMELY QUICK (one in 3 hours) at any rate, I have not given up on them yet

Thanks Cristina! I don't know if I'm brave enough to become a little scientist and attempt the dilution stuff; think I'll just order some 11 mg; the headache stuff is also hard to figure at this time of the year b/c my allergies tend to give me headaches often also, but it can't hurt to decrease the nic level. So far I have been able to cut almost in half the analog usage in less than a week of vaping, so if I find one I can use more often that should help me to improve that ratio even more.
