Hi All,

So I reached week one. Got my juice in (Charlie Nobles custard is AMAZEBALLS!!!!!!!!!!), and so far so good except for one tiny problem;

Getting some major coughing fits at the moment and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I checked out the “what to expect” thread that gave a pretty detailed breakdown of things that might happen (ulcers and the like) and I couldn’t see anything specific to what I was experiencing or rather in the way that I’m experiencing it.

Now I have tried with two different ratio types at three different Nic levels; 24/18/6mg and 50:50 and 70:30 (VG:pG) and it seems to happen regardless so I’m a little lost as to identifying the problem.

Sometimes I’ll take a hit, no problem, then other times (more often than not) I’ll take a hit and I get into a manic coughing fit as if I had either a tickle or a cold. I’m keeping my mod at 65w, I just changed the coil (I was getting a peppery taste) and the flavour is back on track but the cough remains.

Has anyone experienced this before? I should also mention I’m getting a gurgle from my mod (like a sizzle when you throw water onto a hot element or throw something into a fryer) so I wondered if I should be running hotter/colder?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and advise.

Are you trying to vape like you smoked ciggies? Try to smoke like it's a pipe instead (hold the vape in your mouth and slowly inhale from there).

Sizzling and gurgling are different.
Sizzling can mean too hot, though with too hot you might be also get a burnt taste.
Gurgligng can mean not-hot-enough, or "flooding" (too much juice getting to the coil).

As far as the gurgling, when my coils are way too flooded they don't work right, I think the juice boils more than vaporizes, and it causes me to cough at that point. Short term solutions are take a paper towel scrap, twist it up, and shove it gently down the mouth piece all the way in side to sop up extra juice, or sometimes the answer is to actually run at higher wattage to vaporize the juice more, but you could burn up your coil faster with higher wattage. If it seems like the coils are always flooding you may want to look into higher vg juice because it is thicker and will not flow through wicking as quickly. Also pg, for me anyway) is a little harsh on the throat.

Productive or unproductive cough? (Is stuff coming up?)
Definitely an unproductive cough, the kind you’d get from taking a lungful in a sauna (which @Blargh23 highlighted).

I just tried the pipe technique and I uppped the wattage to 95....seems to be a lot smoother, though I’m not perfect at it.

Thanks for that, I noticed on the coil the “best” wattage was 65w at its max. So is the best limits for the coil or for the performance? If it’s for the coil I’ll get either different coils or just buy more, but if it’s for the performance (smoothness of vape) why would the juice gurgle? I have to apologise because this mod has got so many different settings I’m holding out for a Terminator Salvation hydrogen cell self-destruct setting (no luck so far).

the "best" wattage is what the manufacturer feels is the best balance for output and longevity. running higher than that range will depend on if it can wick the juice fast enough. if it can keep up you should be fine, you may not get the same "lifespan" of the coil as you would within the "best" range though.

the tickle you mention is normal, i get it when i haven't been drinking enough water.

At higher wattage you can usually take shorter drags. My general rule for wattage is start low then go up slowly til it gets hotter than i want to feel, then turn it back down a couple watts.
I’m starting to play around with the wattage but I’m thinking I should get the higher coils (NRG GT8) to compensate.

At the moment I’m getting a spatter on my tongue, juice tastes better inhaled.

Higher resistance coils and lower vape production. Too much vape, too hot, can cause coughing and also, with that low resistance you could be reacting to the nicotine as well. I also might continue playing with PG/VG ratios, to see what happens.

But for me, vaping 12 mg on a sub0hm setup, well, I was coughing my brains out. I found out I was a MTL vaper in short order, and drastically increased my resistance and upping my nicotine to 18 m.g. But, I was also getting nic overload at that level, which caused coughing, which only made "harshness" worse, and caused more coughing as I vaped.

I would seriously try a different resistance at the least, or maybe an entirely different tank. The harshness you may be feeling is simply flooding yourself with a lot of very warm vapor.

I am also PG sensitive, and too much PG causes coughing, harshness, and a pins and needles sensation. You really want to play around until you find a vape that is tolerable. Some coughing is normal in the beginning, but not coughing to that degree, from the sounds of your description.

Best of luck,

Anna

It is very rare to find a satisfactory vape using liquids with different pg/vg ratios, different nic mg/ml, different flavorings & sweeteners all at the same wattage, even using the exact same delivery device, airflow & resistance.

The whole point in owning an adjustable output power device is to be able to adjust power up/down to find your personal sweet spot(s) using a wide variety of dozens of variables.
Setting your 'mod' (whatever that is) to any power level & just leaving it there and attempting to vape even different flavors of the same pg/vg and nic mg/ml liquids is going to result in lackluster vape experience / quality.

I suspect one issue that probably is causing your coughing is using 18 - 24 mg/ml nic with a a sub ohm high power set up.

Good point, when I got my mod I was looking for something that:

A) worked
B) wasn’t hard to get parts for
C) flexible

So I’m going to hit the manual again and try to figure it out but I have to admit the last time I tried I was all....DAFUQ?!

Did you solve the coughing issue? To avoid it you have to inhale straight to the lung. That should stop the coughing. When i vaped NON-sub ohm I would vape like a cig and pull it in the mouth and then inhale. When i adopted sub ohm I started coughing until I pulled straight to the lungs which completely solved that issue. It is a bit strange at first but it works great.

So far Ive not been able to solve the coughing, put the wattage up to 75, 95 and will be trying some of the different modes out on the weekend (it’s currently at VW), I’ve cleared the tank and refilled with Charlie Noble juice to see if that helps.

Probably the most frustrating is I can take a vape now, not cough, do it again an hour or so later......and I’m Coughy McSplutterface. But the previous posts have given me a lot to think about so a lot of experimentation going to go down this weekend.

I was a heavy smoker, two packs a day for 32 years, when I picked up vaping.

I had a very productive cough for a couple weeks getting rid of a lot of crap that was built up inside my lungs..

Other than that, there is an adjustment period... your taking in a new foreign product and inhaling it, the cough is your lungs saying WTH?

It also goes away in a couple weeks, once your throat and lungs are more used to vaping.

If it's not gone in two to three weeks it's a matter of the way your vaping or some problem with how your vaping which will need solved.

Don't forget to play with airflow and how you hit it at different wattage. Lower watts and less air could work for you...
