Could someone explain the "Death of an Atty" for me?

I have been vaping for about a month ... cig free for a short time so far. But ya'll have freaked me out a bit concerning atty failure, so I stockpiled. I've been hitting the PV HARD and constant like it is the "straw of life" to get rid of the cigs. I've been using the same two attys on a 510 and the eGo doing nothing more than blowing them out each evening. What am I looking for when my atty goes? Do they simply stop getting as hot? Will they give off a burnt taste? When do I change them out? I think I'm doing ok for now, I just want to know what to be looking out for. For me it would be easier if they would die in a fanfare of sparks and popping noises so I know for sure!!!

Every atty will eventually die. Inside it is a heating element, sortof like the filament in a light bulb. Like a light bulb, it will eventually break and require replacement after enough heating/cooling cycles, and simply won't get hot anymore (which means you won't get vapor anymore). That said, they can last quite a long time. I've heard people here saying that they've lasted months, and others say days. I'm a bit over a month on mine.

Yup, as Zal42 said they usually just quit getting hot. If you run them dry they can get a permanent burned flavor to them that make you quit using it. Some juices also clog atty's to the point that they no longer work properly, but these can sometimes be revived with an alcohol soak or a dry burn. I've been vaping for around 9 months and have only had 3 atty's die completely. A couple got clogged up with bad juice and were no longer salvagable. Overall I'm averaging around 2 months per atty. I keep a bunch of spares, probably too many since I've got around 25. But better safe than sorry.

When I first started I had real bad luck with attys. I would only have 3 and they would all manage to crap out around the same time. VERY frustrating. Now I only buy genuine joye, and have had much better luck, but I still keep extras.

If you are a chain vaper, consider rotating a couple out throughout the day. I can't swear that will help, but I have read that from many more experienced people than myself.
