I see a lot of those little counters with how many cigs avoided/days quit counters on them that say 'get paid to quit'

anyone actually made money from them?
watched the vid but they pretty much lost me by using the word 'viral'..not that a virus on my computer is a worry since I use linux but virus just has all kinds of bad connotations..

I don't know if they mean they will pay you, or if they're saying it because by not buying a pack everyday will save you money therefore you will get paid for not smoking. All I know is I wish I took the money out of my bank and stashed it away every week so that I could have that $2,000 some odd dollars saved away instead of spent on other useless crap that I didn't need to spend it on. I guess it's not too late fro me to start now...

Others have answered as to the purpose of the counters, but I'd like to address the "viral" phrasing...

It's become another buzzword to refer to anything that gains popularity without massive advertising dollars behind it to be "viral" as it's being spread person to person.
We used to simply refer to that as "word of mouth", but new methods and formats of communication change the context.

For more information on the context of "viral", refer to "viral videos" which are essentially any independently produced (not a fan of that term either) video uploaded to a youtube-type site, or shared over p2p programs or email which gains rapid popularity. Usually, these are funny or amazing feats.
