I remember going to hockey games and they decided to ban smoking in the stadium, so they created a pen outside one of the exits using barriers. As soon as the horn sounded to end the period, all the smokers would bolt toward that area and for some of them, it was halfway around the stadium. Once you got to the area, there was nothing to block the wind, no roof or canopy to keep the rain or snow off of you, and people were packed in shoulder to shoulder, but they never made it larger by simply moving the barriers a bit. There were security guards prowling around the outside of the barriers to make sure the jostling didn't turn into shoving and then fists. I remember standing there being bumped from all sides as I tried to catch a quick smoke, watching the guards patrolling these law-abiding citizens who were forced like animals into a pen to enjoy their legal habit and I thought, "This is America now? Really?" Imagine if any other group in society were treated like this. There would be widespread outrage. But since we were "dirty smokers" it was not only okay, it was cheered.
So yeah, I don't miss being treated like that.
Going outside to smoke in the cold is the worst, but going out on a really hot, humid day isn't a lot of fun either. You come back in stinking of smoke AND sweat.
