My sister & I both think staying in Independent Living and getting some home health aide help is the way to go (the key is to keep him out of the nursing home section as long as possible) but I think he's decided to move.

I'm just spending my time researching headboards with bookcases in them. (He was planning to put his nightstand in the middle of the room next to the bed.) I have gone slightly insane with this project. Okay, slightly more insane.

Okay. Then I don't have to try it immediately. (Eventually, yes.)

have a very, very large bottle of no-nic waffle from another vendor. Once that is gone, I want to try deej's waffle which I bet would go well with Butternilla.

Isn't one advantage of being in a nursing home 24 hour monitoring, to some degree anyway? We had to sign some eye-opening documents when my grandma checked in. What your dad may lose in freedom (I hope he can cope with that), they may make it up with social activities and peace of mind, hopefully.

I'm sorry you're going through it. :(

He's in a community with continuity of care. He's currently in his own apartment but gets one meal a day plus some monitoring. He plays bridge. Wins at Scrabble every time. They have movies and other activities. Car service to doctor's appointments. Social workers on staff. Assisted living is a smaller apartment on a hall with a nurse. A little more monitoring and medical assistance (both of which he could hire an aide for) and three meals a day. Other than that, everything is the same.

His problems are physical, not mental but, thanks to a state law, once he is no longer able to get out of bed on his own and transfer himself to a chair (or to his walker or, if he gets one, an electric scooter) he will not be able to hire assistance for that (which he could in independent living.) He will have to go to the nursing home, a locked unit with a lot of patients with dementia (who are at risk for wandering.) He will get severely depressed. And it will kill him.

I'm sorry you're going through it.
He's 92. Dealing with this carp is kind of inevitable.

You're right. What he has now sounds very good. I wouldn't vote for nursing home either. I spent weeks in one to keep my grandma company and it wasn't the best environment I must say. My grandma was healthy all her life until a stroke at 97. The nursing home might have done her in. :(

Yeah, these things are inevitable. Sigh...

Cat naps is a VERY good idea... and it looks like I'm gonna have to take one in a few moments...

In my varied past, I was in charge of maintenance at a nursing home for a year or so...

I had to resign... I would come home and drink WAY too much.

It is a tough job.

Have a good nap...:)

Deej, I was an administrator at Bellevue Hospital for 3 1/2 years. There were definitely times I wished I could have used your escape mechanism.

Don't get me wrong. This place is excellent. I know what bad nursing homes are like.

A lawsuit stopped all the Enriched Housing (assisted living) facilities in NYS from becoming Enhanced Assisted Living Residences. The lawsuit has ended and they places that applied for the change are slowly being approved. If that happens in time for him to take advantage, he'll be able to hire help and could stay in assisted living unless he were truly in need of a nursing home. Then moving would be best.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Any word on the tanks?

Congrats on the reviews Deej!!!

Poeia.....my grandmother was put in a nursing home about 8 months ago and she has actually done better. The place she is at is really great and have a wonderful staff. She just loves being around other people and play dominoes and stuff. I know what the bad ones can be like though and that is a scary thought!!

Poeia, I hope you'd dad can stay as independent as possible for as long as possible....

( I worked at at an assisted living facility for about 3 weeks...it was a good one, but I still couldn't do it)
This is the same place as the independent living. Same dining room, same activities. Just with a little more supervision.

Just popping in real quick... still burnt around the edges (that marathon took more out of me than I thought!), so I'm calling it an early night (for me).

See y'all tomorrow !!!

Oh... while I'm thinking on it... any interest in Passion Fruit and Papaya?
Not from me.
