Poeia- i always wondered where "on" line came from....but once others have stood on line behind you aren't you then 'in' the line?

I think that was Poeia's point. To get "in line" implies that you .... your way "in". So, you get "on line". Once someone else gets "on line" behind you, then you are officially "in line". Getting on line seems much more correct from a technical standpoint.
I hate it when my cell phone rings with an important, yet sensitive phone call, forcing me to disinqueue after my in line status has matured almost to fruition...... Most annoying at DMV and the grocery store.
