Hey all,

I've started with a subtank mini and there's nothing easier to build, I still use it.

I always was a mouth-to-lung smoker (in fact like many who smoke that way, I never knew you could smoke another way until I started vaping and saw all this talk about "direct lung hit") and my very first gear was the subtank mini. I set the airflow on minimum, it's got a tight pull, great flavor with rayon, it's really perfect for me.

But I did not know that until I decided to get a real RTA a bit later. Fast forward a couple month, and I've now got a Billow, a Griffin, a Lemo 2 and some kind of RDA called the Mutation V3.

None of those is even close to what I am looking for - even the Lemo that I got because it's single coil doesn't have that constricted mouth-to-lung hit I am after. In fact, I make a point to use them all because it cost me so much, but I hate them all and I'm only happy when I use my subtank.

Oh yeah... except the RDA, I just got it because I thought I had to try a dripper at some point - ultimate flavor, they say!- , then realized, oh wait, I bet dripping means direct inhale only...?

The Billow is a dual-coil setup made for direct lung hits. You can close the airflow and pretend to use it otherwise, but it gets hot fast. It's very easy to wick though, it's a shame.

The Griffin is an absolute biatch to wick at my level, is also a @#$ dual coil only (I bought it because I thought you could plug something into the deck to make it single coil), needs 45w to produce decent cloud of vapor with the coils I'm feeding it, and really, really has no flavor whatsoever if you inhale indirectly. And this is from someone who's only using rayon to wick now.

The Lemo 2 is ok. I can somewhat bring the airflow to what I like, but not quite. The flavor is decent-ish. The way you need to make the coils for it is somewhat ......ed (twisting the legs sideways...?) and I still haven't found a way to clean its chamber if it leaks without having to remove the wick entirely.

I was wondering if someone here might have the answer for me - is there any RTA that would do what I'm after?

Thanks!

The kayfun 4 clone from tobecco is stellar. Quality 1:1 clone and it gives a beautiful vape experience and all in it shouldn't cost you more than $25 tops.

There's a bit of a learning curve getting it set up but once you got it down it's an easy build. The airflow control is a pain in the ... but once you have it dialed in it's set and forget you never have to touch it again.

There are many options. I will list some that I have and are great performers:

- Kayfun Mini v3 (the MTL champion)
- Kayfun v4
- Kayfun Lite Plus
- Ubertoot v2
- Hurricane
- Squape R/Rs

All above are great MTL'ers, easy to build & wick.

If you ask what would I choose : Kayfun Mini V3 hands down. It's stellar. What a great MTL RTA.

    • Nautilus - there are 3rd party RTA's available for them, last I looked they were out of stock. Both the BVC and BDC can be rebuilt with tons of care and attention to small details. (the BDC is easier to rebuild)
    • The KFV4 is a popular choice (I rarely use mine as I'm more DTL vaper)
    • As you noted there are many choices where the airflow can be shut almost to completely off but due to the size of the chamber and/or coil "shutting down" to MTL does not really work as hoped for.
While it might seem rather silly, if you 'reverse engineer' the good M2L tanks they all have thin wire and very small ID coils being driven with fairly to very low power. (for example) the Lemo2 has room for dual coils (if you wish) however fitting a 10wrap 32AWG 2mm ID coil is even easier. ;)

I got a KFV4 since I last wrote in this thread, and it would be the best tank ever for my needs... If I could get the damn thing to work properly. No matter what I do it's always leaking through the airholes, I've tried wicking it in every possible way I could think about (I use rayon) but no dice. It's not the infamous piece number 9 either, it's nice and tight. The airflow mechanism confuses me, I'm closing it before I fill the tank but as soon as I take a pull my chamber starts to fill. I'm almost ready to try to wick it with cotton to see if the issue is rayon, but it seems dumb, I've used rayon is all the other tanks I own and I never had this issue before. It's pretty frustrating.
