One if my first issues when setting up my DID was that my wick was not thick enough. I was following most videos and trying to gauge what size of wick to use. I have found that a thicker densely rolled wick gives me much better performance. Since the DID uses 3.5mm wick hole (standard and short DID), I am currently using a wick that is 31mm tall by 115mm wide (500 mesh although 400 would suffice) wrapped tightly around a 0.8mm brass rod (small hole through the center of the wick) on a short DID. My wick fits snugly into the wick hole, but not overly tight.
Also I found that in the beginning using a 4/3 wrap was easier to setup and was less prone to hot spots. I highly recommend the Peter K. method for wrapping a coil and setting up a wick as it is the easiest to troubleshoot and minimizes hot spots.
