Took my first crack at making my own coils for the vivi nova tonight.

I picked up a spool of 30 gauge kanthal from the local shop on Saturday and stopped at Hobby Lobby for a skein of peaches n cream ecru cotton yarn. Total investment was about $5. That was for 10 feet of wire and 360 feet of yarn.

It took me a few tries to get it wrapped just right and I probably wasted a foot of yarn and 6 inches of wire but I'm vaping on a 1.6 ohm coil that makes some serious vapor and great flavor for literally pennies on the dollar of what buying new heads cost. It makes great vapor on my ego twist at about 3.8 volts. Gonna give it a little more voltage and see how it holds up.

I think I'm gonna play around with some different gauges of wire and removing strands from the yarn weave but I'm stoked for now.

Go for it! I just rebuilt an aspire BDC last night, a coil which many vape reviewers didn't think could be done at first. I watched rip trippers' video one time and bam! First try. I now have a 1.6 ohm dual coil head that's better than new. Total cost, about 12 cents.

It's really dependent on the resistance I'm going for. I'm really looking for consistency in my coils so I shoot for 1.6-2.0 ohms. I have been achieving a pretty solid 1.8 on 6-8 wraps of 30 gauge around a 1/16 drill bit. I like using the drill bit because it works as sort of a jig to install the coil back in the head. This works on both Kanger and Nova style heads no problems. I usually don't even bother torching or dry firing and have really noticed a difference in the way the Protank 2 performs over the stock coils. I've been vaping my current setup for about 2-3 weeks right now. I just dry burn and change the wick.

I think rip trippers made an edit to his rebuild for the BDC coils that says you can remove it entirely. Search it on YouTube and just watch. It was a text comment in the actual video. I've built mine to come out to .9 ohms on my vamo so they won't fire on it but it still works well on my eGo twist.

Awesome. I use the PnC cotton yarn as well. Along with 28g Kanthal. Once you start building your own coils there's just no going back IMO. It feels pretty good to vape on a coil you made yourself. Congrats

I'm building a setup where I will be building my own coils, didn't want to spend money on replacement carto's constantly. I haven't got all my pieces yet, working on it.

I have a question for those who are more experienced in all this, do the majority of local B&M's sell Kanthal wire? I have not yet ventured to any of my local shops, but from what I see of them online, the stock at them appears to consist of eGo and Joyetech kits's, replacement coils for clearomizers and juice. I don't know of any high-end shops here locally that have a huge assortment of accessories outside of these items. Are spools of Kanthal wire something you typically have to purchase online?

All of the shops here also deal with RBAs and RDAs and have a decent selection on hand. My suggestion is to buy from temco's ebay store and get a 50 foot spool for 5 bucks. Done. And don't have to buy for almost the rest of your life. All the shops here heavily inflate the prices of their wire and mesh. $3 for 10 feet is a little absurd but they do have a huge overhead.
