I thought about building a box mod but I'm not really a fan of the form factor. I love the size and feel of the ZNA but mine is not behaving itself at the moment (intermittently auto firing for no apparent reason) plus the dna has some serious limitations IMO namely no reverse battery protection and the inability to regulate down below battery voltage.
Then I heard about the DNA40... all my issues resolved plus temp control... I wanted one. Started looking at available mods but most are boxes, on pre-order or very expensive. I already paid a high price for my original ZNA30 and didn't want a repeat of that.
So after having a think I struck on an idea. Buy a ZNA "style" mod, you can get them reasonably cheap with a China DNA30 "style" chipset and fit an original DNA40. If I couldn't get it to work or I had to chop it around a little I wouldn't feel bad and I haven't thrown the best part of £300 in the bin!
After having a look around I got hold of what people considered "the best" ZNA30 "style" mod which cost me £70 and an original DNA40 £60.
The ZNA "style" mod blew me away. The quality of the mod itself is on a par with the original. The engineering and finish is superb and it's Z2 threaded like the original. The only two things that let it down are the battery tube that feels light and a less quality piece than the original and the top cap has a "floating" style 510 connector which I had to take my Dremmel to because it was about 3mm too long and every atty I put on it was stuck up in the air.
The DNA40 was a different story. The first one I received was a dud! Didn't power up, dead as a do-do. Vape Dojo, who I got it from, were really good and exchanged it no problem, even refunding me the postage cost to send it back (their customer service is top class). The replacement arrived, after 3 weeks
and that worked fine. Evolv really need to get a handle on their quality control before their reputation goes down the pan!
It took me half a day to figure how the mod was assembled, and to fettle the new board and the board enclosure to fit where the fire button press felt like the original and the power up/down buttons sat flush to the body.
Here are some pics...
So how does it vape with the temp control? I take my hat off to the guys at Evolv Vapor. The temp control is amazing. I can vape my drippers and don't have to worry about dry hits or burning my cotton. I purposely vaped it dry an all that happens is you end up with no vapor. There are a few bugs in the chipset tbh. A couple of times it has switched out of temp control after waking it up from sleep mode. I found disconnecting the battery then connecting again fixes that one!
The battery monitoring is really good. It diagnosed that one of my 4 batteries was bad (weak battery message - whenever you get an error it flashes up 3 times). And the other thing I like about the DNA40 is when the battery goes low or the wattage is too high for the size battery you have it doesn't just reset itself like the DNA30 it just limits itself to what it the battery can provide.
So for £130 and a half a day of my time I have a ZNA40 "style" mod which doesn't auto-fire and does exactly what I want it to do, more or less,... I'm a very happy man.
