The first time you vape, you will cough. Like the first time you smoked.

vaping isn't smoking, it is inhaling water-like vapor.

I still use a mouth to lung inhale, but not the same as when I smoked. It takes a bit of practice to get used to what works for you to deliver the nicotine the way you need it to. Some folks like a direct lung hit.

Just editing to clarify: you absorb eliquid mostly through the soft membranes of your mouth and nostrils unlike ciagrette smoke which is absorbed mainly in the lungs. For best results, pull vapor into your mouth and exhale through the nostrils.

Interesting. I just tried to use my ecig the way you described - inhaling it like air - and it left me with a scratchy feeling and made me cough. Normally I use it just like I used to use an analog - draw the smoke in, remove the device, and then inhale, and it's fine.

I went through a few different devices before I found something I was really happy with. I wouldn't describe any of them as tasting like "used hookah water", but I had a few that had a horrific burnt plastic taste, as well as some that would let the juice run into my mouth which was revolting as well. And then there are just rubbish juices. I've got a drawer full of them that I've collected over time. Some are great, some are ok and some are just yuck... to me anyway. Everyone has different tastes, so what I hate, other people may really like, and vice versa.

Short answer: No, it's not just part of the ecig experience. Trial and error, you should be able to find something that you like.

When I first moved onto Personal Vaporizers (PV) my mind still focused on what I thought I was missing out on not having a real cigarette. It was the variety of flavours that soon pushed this thought to a distant memory. The flavours available using a PV are great. I can get my small safe nicotine hit (great for for anti anxiety, relieving stress) with the flavour of mint chocolate. How can the taste of a cigarette compare to that!!

i don't mean to be a party pooper, but isn't that just trading out one carcinogen for another? i'm trying to get my dad off smoking because of the health issues, and tobacco still has carcinogens on it— check out the people that have gotten lip and mouth cancer from chewing dip. i can't imagine that would actually be a healthy alternative to smoking, just a different way of doing it. i smoke a pipe occasionally, so i know it tastes great; it's just that it can't be healthy.

thanks for everyone's advice so far, i really appreciate it and am looking forward to more tips.

I understand what you are saying and your concerns, but when talking about a NET you are not actually smoking/burning any tobacco.

You take the tobacco and soak it in the carrier agent (PG/VG, alcohol etc) and let it steep and filter, filter, filter to remove any solids etc and form an extract of the flavor profiles from the tobacco...Imagine a lemon in your water and you remove the lemon but the water still tastes like lemon.
You then take the flavoring you created and add it to the rest of the ingredients (PG,VG, NIC base etc) as your flavor.
Hope this helps ease your concern and if you would like to read more in depth information check out the sub forum http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/liquid-extraction-tobacco/
