Do blank cartomizers contain primer? I've noticed that when using cartomizers with my 510 clone, I get a "gritty" feeling in the back of my throat (almost like I'm sucking on the outlet of a shop vac, lol) that doesn't seem to happen when I'm direct-dripping with the same juice on an atty that I've already burnt the primer off of. At first I thought this was the throat-hit everyone talks about, but from what I gather I should be getting MORE TH from direct dripping, not less.

amrnation is spot on saying that you should let them sit for a while (at least 15 minutes) after you fill them initially. The juice needs to soak and distribute through the filler, otherwise you might get a nasty, harsh taste from them. Cartos that contain filler do not have any primer in them because they don't need it.

You need to say what cartomizers you are using.

Cartomizers with stuffing do not have primer, or at least shouldn't. What brand are you buying?

If you are using LR ones then they will run hotter and you may destroy your battery
If you are using stuffing-type can did not fill it fully and let if sit so all the stuffing is damp, you could get singed taste
Ditto if you run a carto dry
If you are using reservoir-type cartos, yes some of them have primer and it's nasty

Also - I find direct dripping to be airier than using a carto. The juice is more intense in the carto, the vapor may be warmer, and that can mean more TH

anyway in answer to the post. they don't/should contain primer. I just switched from dripping (well not switched but added cartomizers to my repertoire) and have found it's best to fill shake rotate (even spin) and then fill some more. dryspots are the biggest downfall of the cartomizer. they taste awful and fail badly if not really full. but sure are convenient when out and about.
