...I know my ohms law

Awesome. What does 8cm of 24ga kanthal work out to, factoring in any mod and atty inefficiencies? Go!

Get an ohm meter or use a regulated mod. Ohm's law is important and just one part of many in safe mech operation.

Queue the links, folks. Don't have time this morning.

Yes, you need an ohm reader. Whether that's a stand-alone device, or simply a regulated mod that reads ohms, you need some way to check it, before firing on a mech.

Yeah but cant i just use steamengine?
It's not even about that. Steam engine won't tell you if the coil has shorted against the top-cap or build deck. You need to check it on a meter of some sort before you fire it on a mech. Check it again after rewicking, or if you drop it.

You can use that, but that is just a perfect scenario vacuum calculation. My thing is, no 2 wires are the same and the same exact wrap does not always yield the same resistance. It is entirely up to you, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Ohm meters are fairly cheap and the ones specifically built for vaping can usually double as build decks.. I would suggest getting one to be on the safer side

a 10$ meter is a small price to pay to save your hands/face. :thumb:

I can't like those pictures, I just can't.

But look, yes, you need an ohm's meter, *I* need an ohm's meter and I build on regulated mods. I can't tell you how many coils I've shorted out on an ohm's meter, but it's more than the number of my fingers (I have an OHM'S READER, so I still have 10 of them!!!!) It's a great base for building as folks say, and it really.... Steam engine is a tool to approximate, IMO, it's not a tool to be precise with. Not unless you've been winding coils for years, and even then I'm going to bet most mech users or even RTA users fire them and test them on an Ohm's reader first, it's really best honestly, especially as a new user, really, you don't want to have an awful experience due to the lack of a very simple and pretty inexpensive tool that (should) give you peace of mind.

Knowing Ohm's law and steam engine isn't going to make you infallible when it comes to winding coils, I don't think it makes anyone infallible when it comes to coils, not to mention installing them properly on your deck....

Steam Engine won't give you the exact resistance. Steam Engine can't determine if the atomizer has a short. Steam Engine can't determine if the coil has a short. Plugging numbers into Steam Engine does not make you knowledgeable on Ohms Law. Yes, you need an ohm meter and you need to know how to use it and why you need to use it.

You don't if:
1. You have a regulated mod that reads ohms. You can just use that.
2. You are lonely enjoy the warm burning feeling of batteries venting in your pants pocket.
3. You need extensive dental work and don't have dental coverage, just medical.

Yes you could use a regulated mod to test coil for your mech. .. Problem is that the meter in your regulated mod. Should NOT be used to test coil going on Itself.

So you still need that meter to be safe mech or regulated or protected.

I always use the Tab Mini for coils going on a regulated mod. Seems much better that way. Also allows firing to check for hot spots.
