So been reading through this forum a lot and the idea of DIY interested me greatly as I like to DIY everything. So I placed an order with xtreme vaping and got my needed supplies but opted to go no nic this first run. Got a few of there sample flavors and mixed as per the instructions at 20% in a 50-50 pg vg base. Everything smelled great and I couldn't wait so I dripped a few and the mango and dragonfruit stood out immediately as two I thought would be favorites....so I have been trying to wait for the steeping process. I have bathed the bottles in hot water soaks and shaken them often over the past 3 days. I couldn't wait so decided I had to fill an old protank 3 with a blend of the two thought to be favs. Cleaned before hand and put in a new coil. Well, it tastes like absolutely nothing. I am so let down. Any ideas? What went wrong? And is this liquid now useless? Can I get some other flavors and try to bring this stuff to life. I was hoping to save money with this but feel like I am losing bad right now. I am on a budget so if I have to I will just end up vaping this nothing liquid but I have 75 mls to go through....which will suck. Sorry for long post....just need some help from you experts out there. Thanks vapers

Without knowing the maker of the flavors, I'll throw out the possibility you may have over-shot on the flavoring percentage. As hard as it may be to believe, sometimes too much flavor can taste like nothing at all.

As a quick test, you could take a small amount of your DIY juice (say 1ml) and mix it with an equal amount of unflavored base (to cut the flavoring percentage in half) and see if that helps. Good luck! :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

Part of the DIY process is often time...When trying new flavorings it's wise to start with little 3mm samples, mix a singe flavor at a lower percentage, try just a touch of it fresh, let it steep a while and try again, repeat...some need time to come to flavor, some need more flavoring, some less. It would be best if you have regular premixed juices to fall back on until you can mix your own that will be good to your tastes. You're doing the right thing with reading and researching here, although everyone has different tastes...
You never know, your flavors might come out with more time, try them separately first as mixes react differently than you might think and could need to mesh and combine...

Thanks for input. I was wondering that also...if maybe the two cancelled eachother out somehow. Thankfully I do have some vendor juices to fallback on.

check out hoosiers flavoring levels. not sure what you have going on but here is a pretty fool proof method of mixing flavors E-Cigarette Forum - Hoosier - Blogs

copy and paste from the blog

Hoosier's levels of flavoring from too little to too much:

Nothing (Did I forget to add the flavoring?)
Something Odd (This does not taste like the flavor I put in there.)
I Can Taste Something Kinda' Like It (I can detect the higher or spice notes, but not the actual taste)
Hooo, It's There, but Real Light (Getting close now, let it steep before adding any more)
Bingo (Duh, we have a juice)
Hmmmm, That Is Close, But Has A "Je Ne Sais Pas" of Oddness (Dang didn't let it steep and I overshot)
Kinda' Close, but the Perfumey/Chemically Kills It (Going into the too much realm here and may be due to ignoring the steep part of #4.)
Whoo, Did I Forget to Put the Flavoring In? (Too much flavoring can actually make things impossible to taste.)
Note that the first tier and last tier are much alike, the only difference is the way the unvaped juice smells. If it smells fairly close, but has no flavor then it is usually too much. (Usually, not always as there are exceptions.)

Steeping means leaving the capped bottle out of sun light for a period of time to allow time for the components time to reach an entropic state. If you think steeping is something else, or don't know what an entropic state is, please talk to someone else about your issues. I have a closed mind on steeping and have not taught basic physics since my freshman classes when the professor gave up trying to counter my arguements and left the class to me.

Xtreme vaping sells want2vape flavor concentrates. Like you said, they recommend them at 20%. Typically, fruit flavors don't need to steep.

As others have mentioned, start with 3ml testers. Whenever I get new flavors, I try them alone, so I know exactly what they should taste like and what percent I like each flavor. I do this without adding nic (saves money). It might be a pain, but I set up 5 ml bottles, one with 5%, 10%, and so on. Some flavors are vastly more potent than others, so testing them individually helps ensure that I don't add too much of one, negating the other flavors. It also ensures that I like each one before ruining larger quantities. With fruit flavors and candy flavors, I shake like crazy and vape. Although I use the 5ml bottles, I only make about 2-3 mls, but the extra room allows for maximum shakeage (my new word).

While this is time consuming, it has saved me from wasting supplies. For instance, many of the recipes I tend to like have Bavarian cream. Before I did individual testing, I added it to many recipes but couldn't figure out why I didn't like any of them. Going back to the individual testing helped me realize how that one flavor was making me think that diy wasn't for me.

For some, diy yields instant success, but for others, including myself, success is not instant. It took me a month to finally come up with some really great juice, and in the meantime, I continued to buy pre-made. I didn't allow myself to quit and not because I believe in clichés about not giving up but because I had too much invested, money wise. Be patient, and know that some concoctions will be trash.

I have a box of "misses." I'm pretty sure we all do!

Twenty percent does seem high, and although those two flavors don't sound like they'd cancel out, I'd try the suggested separate mix at 10% (just make a small amount). See if that works for you, then try combining.

I found it worked best when I got both flavors separately where I liked them, then mixing them together (usually just by mixing together some of the already made stuff and calculating what it turned out to be) and finding the correct balance. Then trying that in a small amount as a mix of both to make sure it turned out the same (sometimes it doesn't).

In my case, I then added a third flavor at low amounts as an accent, but that's just me.

It does take a while, but that perfect flavor can be achieved eventually.

Thanks everyone for the responses thus far. I am gonna take all this into consideration and try the things that have been suggested. I also ordered quite a few of the FA flavors too...think they will be a better quality based on reviews. I will post updates on progress. Thanks again vapers. This a is a great board.
